In 1924, A.A. Milne wrote a collection of poems called When We Were Very Young . Inside the pages of this early volume, there is a poem about Mr. Edward Bear, who eventually became the beloved Winnie-the-Pooh. You can spy Mr. Edward Bear at the top of the stairs in the illustration at the end of this post!
I think these versions of E.H. Shepard’s illustrations (colorized by Mark Burgess in 1989) are particularly striking. And, I think it’s delightful and whimsical that the illustrations were referred to as decorations on A.A. Milne’s book covers!
