Let’s be honest…your mom would rather have donuts than flowers for Mother’s Day, right? Making them at home is easier than you think with this little recipe cheat…you don’t even have to make the dough!
You’ll need:
store bought biscuit dough {NOT the flaky kind}
oil
powdered sugar
whole milk
vanilla
cookie cutters
sprinkles/toppings, if desired
food color, if desired
Start by using your cookie cutters to cut the biscuit dough into your desired message or shapes. If your cutters are on the larger side, you may need to do a little maneuvering to get them to fit. Try to keep the dough uniform thickness and not stretch them too much.
Fill a frying pan with the oil, about 1 inch deep. Heat on low-medium heat, until the oil “dances”…when a sprinkle of water pops. Be very careful, hot oil is dangerous!
When the oil is heated, put the dough shapes in. I usually only put a couple in at a time…this goes very fast, so don’t walk away! Cook on each side for 45-60 seconds. The dough should be a golden brown.
Remove to a plate lined with a paper towel to drain.
To make the glaze, combine 1/4 cup of powdered sugar with a tablespoon or two of milk and a tiny bit of vanilla and food color. This isn’t an exact science…just add the milk as necessary to get the proper consistency. If it gets too thin, add more sugar.
Dip the donuts in the glaze and place on a cooling rack. Add sprinkles or toppings. To make clean up easier, place the cooling rack atop a piece of wax paper to catch any drips.
When the glaze has dried, gift them to the favorite mom in your life!
