My baby offically turned one a couple of weeks ago. If I didn't have all the photos to prove it, I would protest that it just isn’t so! Being a summer baby, we knew we’d be celebrating outdoors. I wanted to have a jungle theme but with certain restraints, I couldn’t feature any real plants into the decor. So instead, I used some polyester and parchment leaves that I found online. Once I decided that gold was going to be the accent colour, I knew that I had to have the mylar “ONE” letter ballons from Oh Shiny Paper Co. and the mylar “1" cake topper with a mini 'M' from Cindy Confetti Sparkle Party Shop.  The “1" and “M" piñatas I made, using a recycled daiper box, tissue, and foil paper. The jar favors were simply little safari animals glue-gunned to the lids and finished with some gold spray paint. All of these, were made with helpful tips and tutorials from Pinterest. The personalized initial name tags and gold party hat were all made using my Cricut Expression. Finished off with a cake, Oreo sprinkle pops, rice krispy squares, and some chocolate-dipped marshmallows, the birthday stage was set!

While he may not remember his first birthday, I wanted Mason to be able to look back on it and see just how much fun we had!

Though comparatively mild to the rest of our Great White North neighbours, Vancouver’s West Coast winters are no joke. So, when the sunshine decides to turn up, the city and its inhabitants get that much needed vitamin D boost. Reenergized and revitalized, the boys and I take advantage of outdoor urban life as much as we can. Aimlessly wandering, we naturally started our day at the park. Fresh air and fun times always leaves us a bit famished. We eventually found ourselves down at Granville Island for a little refuelling. Sitting outside on the pier not only allows us to take in the beautiful waterfront views but keeps the little ones occupied just enough for me to squeeze in a few bites myself. If all else fails, they also have each other to keep occupied. Unfortunately for Mase, that doesn’t always work out in his favour!

With the changing of the seasons, my favourite silhouette is taking shape: the oversized sweatshirt. This top garment makes slouchy an effortless statement and easily pairs with a set of leggings, skinny jeans, or casual slacks. Layer underneath with tees and long sleeves for added warmth when needed. It’s comfortable for the little ones to run amok and—when occasion permits!—nap in, all while keeping them style ready to head out on errands or a playdate.

This third instalment of “From Carter’s Closet” is brought to you by Mini Mioche, with a dash of Beau LOves (tank) and Moon Fries (slouchy beanie).  If you haven’t heard of Mini Mioche yet, read all about them here. Below are just some of the reasons why I quickly fell in love with this brand.

mini mioche core values:

  • Clothing that is ethically and locally made (designed and manufactured in Toronto, Canada) in a way that is not harmful to the environment or our little ones.
  • Clothing that looks great but also stands the test of time in terms of both style and quality.
  • Clothing that kids love to wear because it is so soft and comfy.

The star of his outfit has got to be the pants! This denim is the softest that you will ever feel. I seldom put Carter in anything but stretchy and comfortable leggings, but I have no problem keeping this Mini Mioche denim on him all day long.  The feel, cut and overall style is just perfection. These super soft, super stretchy jeans are perfect for kids aged 3 months to 6 years and come in 8 different colours.

FUNKINS // The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same

By Jenny Smith, Contributor Leave a Comment

A lot of people told me while I was pregnant with Carter that my life was never going to be the same. For the most part that’s true. I couldn’t imagine my life not knowing what my little man’s face looked like and I certainly couldn’t imagine that I’d love someone so much, whose poop I had to clean up. But as Carter’s getting older I realized not everything had to change.

Before Carter was born my sister, Sheila, and I would partake in these gluttonous day-long food tours. We’d explore different neighbourhoods in Vancouver  and other cities to see the best their food scene had to offer. It was always delicious and always a lot of fun. Now that Carter is a bit older and has a lot more energy to burn we’ve gone back to our ways. Not only can things stay the same, but in my opinion getting to involve my little guy makes the experience all the better.

This past weekend we revisited one of our favourite places in Vancouver, Bella Gelateria for their hot chocolate and gelato. Being praised as the best in the world (two time winner of the Florence Gelato Festival in Italy) it certainly won Carter over.

Craftykins // DIY Jumbo Geometric Confetti

By Jenny Smith, Contributor Leave a Comment

Confetti 3a

I’m always on the lookout for quick, fun and easy crafts to do with Carter. I came across this super easy DIY for geometric confetti and thought, “Hmm, this would make a big mess (yet easy enough to clean up). Carter’s going to love it!”

Here are the simple steps:

Gather up some tissue paper (colour of your choice) and stack them on top of each other. Line them up so that the edges are square (I had to trim the tissue a bit to achieve this).

Cut them into about 2″ wide strips. They don’t have to be perfect, I just eyeballed it.

Once you have your strips, start cutting them into triangles.  Again, they don’t have to be perfect.

See, I told you it was super easy!

You can store them in a mason jar if you choose.

Or not.

Now for the fun part! Toss them up in the air and go “Weeeeeeeeeee!”

Have fun and please excuse the mess!

Happy Friday!

Copyright © 2023 · Babiekins Magazine | A Trendsetting Kids' Fashion Magazine and Online Community for Parents and Children Alike · Since the Southern California birth of Babiekins in 2010, the magazine has grown from into an internationally-recognized print publication with a global circulation and now a thriving online community. We are more than a kids’ fashion magazine. We search everywhere for inspiration, and go beyond trends to bring you fashion, style, decor, design, books, DIY, parties, and playthings. Our readers look to us to keep up with the best and most up-to-date concepts in the children’s market worldwide. We have an eye for quirk. We’re high-fashion, but we value whimsy over tradition. Playful childhood is more important to us than making kids into copycat adults. We believe life is beautiful, life is valuable, and life changes when you see it through the eyes of a child. We seek to transcend skin color, language and zip codes and bring out the real, wild, magical creativity inherent in every child. And behind Babiekins is an optimistic team of mothers-turned-editors, working from home, often with our own little babiekins climbing on, under and around the desks. We want to encourage you, and challenge you to see something different — something special — in yourself and in this world we all share. Welcome to Babiekins!
