Sleepykins // Birthday Bunk Beds

By Rachel Fox Kipphut, Contributor Leave a Comment

“Happy Happy  B I R T H D A Y   Eva Dear.  Happy days will come to you all year.  If I had a wish , that wish would be …. A very Happy Birthday to you from me!”

#ExtracuteEva just turned S I X !  What is this girl all about?  Bunk beds, dolls , books , her very special chalkboard wallpaper, traveling and  Hello Kitty. This cutie has more than an extra chromosome, she has spunk + MOXIE !  We decided to create a room for Eva that plays to her strengths, her talents, fosters creativity and is filled with all of her favorite things.  Last winter, Eva was hospitalized for a few weeks with Pneumonia. At the time, Eva was sharing a room with her little sister Elsie.  It wasn’t until the two were separated (during this time) that we noticed a huge personality difference in the girls.  Eva, being alone with one of us at the hospital became a little more confident, overly funny and goofy! A side to her we had never seen before.  Elsie became more independent around the house, and didn’t go out of her way to get attention.  Now don’t get me wrong, these two are very close as sisters, at times inseparable.  It became clear that Eva ( being the older sister) needed her own space and her own room.  That’s when we started planning moving Ethan out of his nursery and moving him in with Elsie, giving Eva her own room.

It took a little over a year to get Eva’s room just right.  She had been in a larger toddler bed and with her growing legs, it became necessary that we look into bigger beds for Eva. This past Christmas, we visited Grandma + Grandpa in South Carolina.  They had set up some old Bunk Beds in the spare room for the kids to sleep on.  We were certain that Elsie would be the first one to the top, but she wanted nothing to do with the bunk beds.  To our surprise, Eva climbed right on up and slept on the top bunk the whole vacation and then took it over again for Easter break.  She loved being up there, and her confidence shined as she knew her usually adventurous little sister didn’t want to climb up.  We decided, Birthday Bunk Beds for Eva! We not only found a new-in-the-box pink bunk bed set on Facebook Marketplace ( for under $100 ! ), but a similar mini bunk bed set for her dolls ( also found on Facebook Marketplace).  These bunk beds would be the perfect birthday gift for Eva’s 6th birthday, and the final touches on her new big girl room.  A special room for a very unique little girl.

How sweet is this room by Minnie and Me Interiors? We just love the soft pinks and girly touches; the mix of texture and the little whimsical plush dolls. Here is a little bit about Minnie and Me, and more information on the girl’s rooms!

Minnie and Me Interiors :

Kristy – owner, started Minnie and Me Interiors earlier this year whilst on maternity leave with her daughter, Minnie!  Minnie and Me Interiors, is a small family run business based in Melbourne, Australia that offers design services and produces darling self-adhesive removable wallpapers.

Minnie and Abigail’s (a close friend’s daughter) rooms were the highlights for them last year! These rooms showcase two of their most popular floral removable wallpapers, both available on their website.

Minnie’s Room

As Minnie entered her first year, Kristy wanted to update her room. Minnie is Kristy’s beautiful little daughter and muse. She needed a fun and magical play space in her room to replace the original rocking/ feeding chair as well as a new wardrobe.  The brief for Minnie’s original nursery was pink, pink and more pink! The biggest challenge was probably selecting the right shade of pink for the wardrobe, as they spent over 2 hours searching for the perfect shade!

Kristy wanted to keep the original feminine and cozy feel by including different textures and beautiful decor. Custom wallpaper was one of the show stopping features in the room and the delicate bouquet of beautiful flowers on a blush background is simply perfect. The feature wall is Kristy’s favorite thing about the space, and she continues to be in love with it!

Abigail’s Room

Abigail’s room was a special project for Kristy, as it was for the daughter of her much loved friends, Emma and Andrew. Emma longed for pastels and grey with touches of gold for the color scheme. They also really wanted a beautiful but practical nursing chair, beautiful artwork, book shelves, a gorgeous rug and decals or wallpaper for the feature wall. They described the space they envisioned using words like pretty, floral, and girly!

The focal point of a room is the custom pink watercolour floral removable wallpaper by Minnie and Me Interiors. They didn’t even look at any other wallpapers, once Emma laid eyes on this feminine, timeless and elegant print, she just had to have it. Kristy’s absolute favorite feature in Abi’s room is her beautiful doll’s house! Every little girls dream, and set against the beautiful feature wall showcasing their gorgeous floral wallpaper, with large scale blooms the impact is simply divine.

Tahnee Pownall of @homeofthewildlings recently poster her son’s room with these gorgeous teals and browns and we were smitten!

So we wanted to learn a little more about her process and get her tips and tricks on creating a room that’s beautiful and functional.

{Q} Are you a professional interior designer?

{A} No, I’m not an interior designer. I have never taken an interior or photography course and I am all self-taught. I just find it comes very naturally to me as it’s a big passion of mine.

{Q} What was your inspiration for your son’s room?

{A} I wanted to stray away from the typical boy’s room designs and loved the idea of setting up a boyish version of an enchanted forest.

{Q} Is the room based on any particular trend in children’s design?

{A} I think the room incorporates a lot of trends at the moment but that’s not the reason they are there, everything in Parkers room has been chosen to meet a theme and fit in with our style.

{Q} Where do you like to shop for children’s home goods?

{A} I shop for 95% of parkers things from small businesses and off of Instagram. It really is the most incredible place with such talented handmaidens.

{Q} Did you do a lot of pinning on Pinterest for this project?

{A} I actually don’t use Pinterest at all, i have the app but I just never use it.

{Q} Does your son have a particular area or item that he loves the most?

{A} He loves his house bed of course not being in a cot anymore and I think he enjoys the house bed idea and not just sleeping in a traditional bed.

{Q} What piece are you most proud of?

{A} I absolutely adore his birch wallpaper as I think it ties the whole theme and room together to give it that forest woodland theme and feel.

{Q} Did you have a deadline to complete the room by or did you work on it little by little over time?

{A}  I have just worked on it little by little and added pieces as we both grow and our taste changes. Just recently have I changed his bed around and added in the teal accents and I absolutely adore it, but I’m sure i will change it all again soon to add another accent colour.

{Q} Did you DIY anything? If so, what was your favorite project?

{A} We did do some DIY – I found the house bed unpainted and not put together on my local marketplace on Facebook – we put it together and my dad painted it for me. Altogether it would have been under $30 to complete!

{Q} Do you think other moms could create a room as amazing, without the help of an interior decorator? What should other moms consider or plan for when taking on a project like this?

{A} I think most definitely other mums can create a incredible room for their children without an interior stylist. I think people should stick to a theme or design they love and work on that from there – a great idea is to set up a mood board or pick one hero piece for the room or a certain colour and then work off of that.

Arlo’s adorable nursery  gives us all the feels and the before and after is absolutely astonishing!  Kelly and Jeff Mindell put their heart in every detail in this room and it shows in every little corner. How SWEET is the art wall with all the little personal touches. The use of colors are so refreshing  and we loved that they partnered with our favorite –  The Land of Nod on this project!

We can’t wait to see little Arlo grow and learn in this room as we follow Studio Diy’s adventure into parenthood!

We hope this room inspires you on your next project! Tag us on instagram with #babiekinsmag #sleepykins so we can see too!

Featurekins // Perfect Linens

Featurekins // Perfect Linens

When I was looking for the perfect sheets for our farmhouse,  I quickly got overwhelmed with all the choices that were available. I came across Perfect Linens and loved the “fabric science” behind their company. I also loved that they backed up their sheets with a 45-night guarantee, free shipping and returns!

Perfect Linens specialize in impeccable sheets and test each to be sure you are purchasing the most comfortable linens ever.

Some points we really loved are //

Sheets change with usage and Perfect Linens test and retest their linens after multiple launderings!

They curate! Shoppers select from a curated selection of the most comfortable sheets.

And the 45-night LOVE IT (use or abuse – they accept the return) with free shipping both ways!
After reading about all their sheets and options we ended up getting the following :
A Easy BreezyQueen Set : These are perfect for high humidity (hello Arkansas!) because they are exceptionally breathable and are perfect for hot sleepers. It’s light, made of combed cotton, 300 thread count and made in Portugal. They are also Oeko-Tex Certified Free of 100 chemicals that are harmful to humans!
Nana’s Favorite : The boys love these sheets. They are crisp but super soft and have stayed a beautiful white! It has a 500 thread count but the fabric isn’t too heavy or thick!
Toastmaster Full Set : We just changed our sheets to the Toastmaster and they are just so warm and comfortable. Which is good because it’s going to be 15 degrees this week! It is made of brushed microfiber, ranked best for no pilling and super easy to maintain! No lint, no wrinkles and non-shrinking!
Sheets come in a variety of beautiful colors but we wanted to keep the sheets throughout the house “hotel” white.
We love our sheets and the variety Perfect Linens provides. Right now, they are offering a $20 welcome gift to anyone that signs up for their newsletter.

If you know me (Editor-in-Chief Priscila Barros) at all, you know I love a good interiors project. I was thrilled to recently help a sweet family renovate their little boy’s room. They’d bought a farmhouse with good bones and great natural light, so all we really had to do is source some cute accessories.

I discussed with the homeowner, Rachel, what she likes, and then made a mood board. I sent over inspiration, ideas, items and more — and would talk with her through text and email to make sure we could both put our heads together together to make a sweet space for her son.

Rachel did an awesome job getting a few extra odd and ends, too, to bring out the room’s personality. I think we nailed, it don’t you?
