Sleepykins // Prints which bring your room to life!

Meet the two creatives behind Sprout and Sparrow who create bold, contemporary art prints which bring colour and life into any little child’s space. Adi (a former lawyer) and Tash (a graphic designer) are sisters and mums to four cheeky (but gorgeous) kids.

Sprout and Sparrow was born after the two sisters spent hours scouring shops and the internet to find the perfect piece of art for their little ones’. They didn’t want to spend a lot of money and just wanted to find something a little bit different, bold yet colourful. Nothing really grabbed their attention, so in a brief moment of calm during a play date one morning, they came up with an idea over a pot of peppermint tea: “let’s make our own art!” And so they did! It has become a great creative outlet for them and the world loves them.

Adi and Tash find so much inspiration everywhere. They love colour. Even in the midst of the monochrome craze they have always maintained bright colourful pieces in their stunning range. Their new range is predominantly inspired by their kids. Their ‘Paper plane’ print came about because one of their kids is a little obsessed with paper planes; if you look closely at the print, you will see his words on the page. Such a beautiful and personal touch.

Featurekins // Bubble London

This weekend I attended Bubble London; A large trade show that gives children’s wear brands a platform to unveil their new collections. Bubble proved to be a diverse show, from very well established brands to new brands who were exhibiting their lines for the very first time.

Bubble awards a brand debuting at the show an award for innovation and commercial appeal. Previous winners of this ‘Rising Star’ award include Raspberry Plum, Plumeti Rain and Wolf and Rita. This year ”Oh…My! London” were crowned the winners for their line specialising in occasion dresses.

Mummymoon is a brand Babiekins first featured in 2012. This season will see them pushing the boundaries in shapes in childrenswear. The construction of their line of denim and soft fluid basics is something to really appreciate.

Elks is a new brand bringing beautifully whimsical knitwear and tweed. Handmade in Ireland using Alpaca wool, the finest merino and Irish linen. Inspired by Ireland’s cultural history. With a stunning use of colour and herringbone detail. Think cute bonnets, satchels and scarves.

AW15 has Raspberry Plum extending their innovative tailoring into baby rompers, borg lined jackets and knitwear. Jumpsuits that would make a sharp alternative to a party dress. Each piece maintaining the pops of colour, great use of fabric and pattern that make up Raspberry Plum’s signature style to create a strong cohesive line to really get excited about.

Sticky-Fudge. These boots are such a simple concept but so beautifully done. The padded jackets, use of print and subtle metallic touches bring together a range of versatile ready to wear basics.

Poppy England. Beautfully illustrated dresses, where the attention to detail is second to none. Each dress comes with a short story, the story is brought to life through the characters on the dress. Such a beautiful concept to ignite your little Babiekin’s imagination.

Mini Melissa bring a new take on their love of feline inspired shoes. These super cute pumps would suit boy or girl. And as you would expect from Mini Melissa smell great!

MOLO; promises some big things for 2015. Look out for big moves… Their bold use of animal prints and strong lines continue throughout a range of street wear with real attitude.

Papu; a new Finnish brand with a range of rich ocre, strong monochromatic prints in great basics that we’ve known to love in Scandinavian design.

Braveling; taking tights and leggings to the next step. What can ordinarily be used as a staple, Braveling uses to inject real personality into your little ones wardrobe. Knees will soon be the star of the show!

With so many new brands emerging 2015 will be an exciting year for kids style.

Sleepykins // Kid’s Bedroom as seen in Print 5

Did you catch this bedroom in our latest print issue? It’s a little explorer’s adventurous oasis! We love it for a number of reasons — one is that it’s a tiny apartment room in a rented home, and we were able to transform it without making any permanent or architectural changes. We also love this room because it is just so full of ways to explore, and childhood is all about imagination and exploration. Here, in this little room, you can rattle down the streets of Italy in a Vespa, lift high over the ancient ruins of Myanmar’s Bagan in a hot air balloon, or sail across the waters on a creaky wooden ship.

The room is dotted with global elements — a doll brought back from a friend’s visit to Kenya, a ceramic bowl and dumpling spoon from Taiwan, Hmong textiles, a strand of mirrors and bells originally meant to decorate a camel, an embroidered dress from Guatemala, a row of matryoshka illustrations representing different cultures. And there’s a cozy reading nook, too, stocked with plenty of books and cushions and providing is the perfect launching point toward endless destinations.

Sleepykins // Live Loud & Play

At Babiekins Magazine, but we love REAL rooms. Rooms that you can feel are lived in and loved. Linda of Live Loud Girl, graciously shares her boys’ playroom with us.

In our home, we generally keep things a basic white. White generates a feeling of peace. HOwever, don’t be afraid to introduce a bold color (like the yellow vintage casalino chairs purchased on Ebay). I like to add a mix of styles and finds that are both old and new to create a space that speaks. Your home should reflect the story of your life, and we certainly should’t forget that kid spaces are for kids!
I’m not a big fan of themed rooms. I like when they can grow into a room. Less is more. Kids often have a lot of knick knacks and toys, so I try to find solutions to declutter and make cleaning easy for them (and mommy).This playspace is in our living room and the boys love to be around us. They hardly play in their own rooms. In this play space, everyone can be together, but there is space for independent play. Jack loves to draw and Sam to race with his cars. The table gives enough space to do that!

Sleepykins// Simon's Space

When we first came up with the idea for Simon’s room, he was just the size of a banana and we had no clue if he was in fact a he or a she. We wanted to keep the room in gender neutral colors. We chose seafoam and white for the accent wall and kept all furniture white as well, timeless, bright and happy.
Once Simon ripened from a squishy little tot into a rambunctious toddler, we felt the need to spruce it down, make it more boyish to fit his little bouncy personality. However, I didn’t want to let the nursery atmosphere go completely, hoping I could bring one more baby into it, in the not too farfetched future.And so the white birch-forest stayed and so did his changing-table-turned-shelf and crib-turned-toddler-bed pieces.

We brought in some items we thought would make it more entertaining, we were inspired by pop-art colors and pop-art toys, the monkey posters and the rocking airplane fit into this circus-y idea, and so do the little collector toys. I really wanted a tepee since I still remember an old one my brother and I had, little campouts in the middle of the room are what toddler dreams are made of. Simon truly loves it, we read bedtime stories in it every night. We also got him a little piano, I naively thought it will be the cutest sight to watch him compose sonatas and etudes, but for now it has served faithfully as a stepping stool. Lately, however he has been more inclined to play it, I am not holding my breath for a great composer in the making though.
