Funkins // BeachDayz & Craft

Summertime means spending time at the beach. Whether you are soaking in the sun or trying to beat the heat, beaches are fun for the whole family! Originally,our family is from New York and we have since moved to North Carolina. We have enjoyed discovering new beaches in the South as a family. At the beach, our toddler girl’s seem to be getting more and more confident in the water. This summer,we have spent time at Jamestown Beach in Williamsburg, Virginia and Jordan Lake in Apex, North Carolina. What we love about summer living in the south is the frequent summer thunderstorms. We got to experience a beautiful storm while at the beach in Williamsburg. We also enjoyed looking for shells (and catching a strange bug flying near Elsie in one of our photos). For every beach the girl’s have been to, I have taken a few shells back to scrapbook. So far, none have been as big as the ones we found in Virginia. I felt as though these shells needed to be on display. When we returned home, our friends in Virginia recommended that we boil the shells in water on the stove-top with a small cap full of bleach. This is to rid the shells of any stinky or fishy smells. I thought that was a great idea! I have seen many shells put in frames and jars before, but I hadn’t seen any that were fun and funky. If you know me, you know I love bright, fun and funky colors! I sat the girl’s down for them to each paint a shell they had found using three different colors. You can even paint them in ombre effect or paint them more abstract like ours. Once the shells dried, we hot-glued them to paper that we placed in a shadow box frame. In the lower right hand corner I labeled the beach and year and ….. VOILA! Now we have a little piece of the beach on display to always remember our trip. I bet you could even take a little bit of the sand back with you to fill the bottom of your shadow box. We hope to visit a few more beaches before we head back to school with more shells and some new fun beach memories. Hooray for beach fun!

Craftykins // DIY Pick Up Sticks Game

Did you play pick up sticks as a child? I have many memories playing on summer afternoons with my grandmother…she was some kind of stick flipping genius…seriously, she was SO GOOD.

In an effort to scale back on my littles’ screen time, I’ve been trying to come up with more classic fun for us to do together. This game fits the bill, and you can make your own set with supplies you probably already have in your home!

You’ll need:

30 wooden skewers {available at most grocery stores}

scissors

masking tape {optional}

craft paint {traditionally colors are black, red, blue, green, and yellow…but I chose my own!}

fine grit sandpaper {optional}

clear sealant {optional}

Start by clipping the pointy ends off the skewers. If there is any splintering, gently sand until smooth.

Tape off each stick into a striped pattern, if desired. I grouped my patterns by color.

Traditionally, the game has 1 black stick {worth 25 points}, 7 red sticks {worth 10 points each}, 7 blue sticks {worth 5 points each}, 8 green sticks {worth 2 points each}, and 7 yellow sticks {worth 1 point each}…but again, group them how you like!

Also, we alter our rules a bit to fit my children’s abilities…we just count how many sticks we’ve collected at the end of the game rather than go by points. Do what works for you!

After you’ve taped, paint your sticks.

After the paint has completely dried, carefully peel off tape. Coat each with clear sealant if desired.

You’re ready to play!

Craftykins // Painted Eggs

Easter egg hunts are my favorite part of Easter morning, I love the excitement and joy in my son’s face when he discovers the hidden little treasures. Have you ever had an Easter egg hunt with eggs as pretty as these? Imagine the looks on your little babiekins, when they discover: a chalk egg with their name on it, an egg with a funny saying, an egg with their favorite emoji, eggs with mix-and-match faces they can create a sculpture out of, a pretty strawberry egg, or bright fun colorful neon dip-dyed eggs. These eggs are, pardon the egg-pressions egg-traordinary, egg-cellent, and egg-ceptional! They are also a fun craft for you and your little babiekins to enjoy together this holiday weekend.

Craftykins // DIY Easter Bunny Crayons

I’m always on the hunt for little holiday treats for school and party favors that aren’t food. These sweet little bunny crayons are perfect for filling eggs…and are easy and inexpensive to make, too!

To make them you’ll need:

silicone mold {I found this one in the baking section of the craft store}

crayons {old stubby, broken ones work perfectly for this!}

cookie sheet

oven

Choose the crayon colors you’d like your new crayons to be. For these Easter bunnies, I chose spring-ish pastels and white.

Remove the wrappers. I’ve found they don’t peel easily, so I carefully slice the wrapper from top to bottom with a craft knife.

Break the crayons in tiny pieces and mound them into the mold. They melt down quite a bit, so really pack them in.

Place mold on a cookie sheet in a 300 degree oven for 15-20 minutes, or until crayons are completely melted. Be extremely careful removing cookie sheet and mold from the oven, as the liquid wax tends to slosh around.

Let the melted crayons cool for about an hour, or until solid. Then pop them out of molds and package them in muslin bags or plastic eggs!

Valentine’s Day Fridge Magnets

Whenever another holiday comes around, I like to think of creative ways to display the cards that I get in the mail from friends and family. I found these birch tags at my local craft store and thought they would make cute magnets for displaying Valentine cards on the fridge.

There are so many things that you could make with these little birch tags but I just picked up a few things that I saw in the craft store. You could also use markers or paint that you already have around your house and decorate them with your kids.

I found these tiny paper roses and itty bitty pom poms at the same craft store and then I also picked up the sticky magnet roll. The gold paint was leftover from a previous project so I used that as well.

I cut the magnet to fit each piece and then stuck it on the back. I used a glue gun to stick on the paper flowers and the pom poms letters, and then some painter’s tape to make a geometric heart which I painted with the gold spray paint. And that’s it! These would be really fun to use for displaying your kid’s Valentine cards from school.
