A few months ago I met with photographer, Celia D. Sanchez, and her daughter, Luna, in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. I was born and raised in Miami and adore the city for all of its vibrancy and diversity. I thought it would be a great idea to shoot some street style and fashion portraits against the colorful backdrops in Little Haiti. We never would have guessed that that one of the images would end up being chosen as the cover for the eighth print edition of Babiekins Magazine! (Click here to see the cover!)
As far as wardrobe styling, I usually like to keep things simple and wearable and avoid “over styled” looks. Classically tailored pieces with unexpected details in fun colors looked great with funky little embroidered pins and hats. I used a jeweled collar under a shirt collar, for a quirky touch. We all know that the Stan Smith shoe is having its “moment”, but so are jellies with socks! Of course, both are perfect for summer.
If you are ever in the Little Haiti neighborhood, make sure to visit the Little Haiti Cultural Center. You’ll find everything from a marketplace to performances. We had the honor of sitting in on an Afro-Caribbean dance class. The dancers danced feverishly to the sound of live drumming. It was amazing!
