LUVKINS :: Editor's Picks :: Top Gift Choices for a Little Scientist :: Girl Scientist from Babiekins Magazine

Yesterday over lunch, my extremely analytical kindergartner was pondering the mysteries of the human body while reading an anatomy book. She lingered over the detailed skin and hair chapter for a while, and then commented, “So, that’s a disappointment. The long hair in movies.” (Accurate.)

But the princess game is strong in our society, isn’t it? There’s nothing wrong with dressing up or fairy tales, of course, but as a parent, I can’t help try to counter the entitlement message that so often goes along with princess culture. So I really love fun gift ideas which encourage my daughter to explore, discover, and actively observe the world around her.

What do you have tucked away to surprise your little babiekins with this Christmas? Here are a few of my recommendations!

01. Hardcover Rosie Revere, Engineer book via Seed Factory Atlanta  |  02. Waterproof Bluetooth Swimmer, Jr Speaker via Polk Boom | 03. Perito Moreno Photoreal Dress via Tea Collection | 04. Yucca Blue / Shell White Fitzsimmons Kids Boots via Native Shoes | 05. Paperback How to be an Explorer of the World book via Barnes & Noble | 06. Brain Cell / Neuron Plush via Giant Microbes | 07. Yay! Pencils via Caroline Creates on Etsy | 08. Nancy B’s Science Club Microscope & Activity Journal via Amazon

[Aveline is wearing kids’ accessory glasses from Target, hat from H&M and faux-fur puffer jacket from Ruum.]

Southern Essentials, Editors Picks

By Elizabeth Pettey, Digital Photo Editor Leave a Comment

As a Southern transplant to the Big Apple, I’ve learned there’s a few things you really just can’t live without — okay, wouldn’t want to live without == regardless of where you’ve planted your feet! From Boston to Nashville to Santa Barbara, here are six year-round “Essentials” for our hip Babiekins mamas!

Editor's Picks: Southern Essentials by Elizabeth Pettey for Babiekins Magazine

01. Jesus Saves Bro Tshirt by Grey Thread | 02. Warmuffs by 7am Enfant | 03. Art by Liza Snyder | 04. Bonnet by The Beaufort Bonnet Company | 05. Women’s Italian Suede Oxfords by Zuzii | 06. Mug by Emily McDowell

{Q} Elizabeth asks Grey Thread: “What is YOUR favorite Grey Thread item?”
{A}
My favorite item in the shop is the black/black Henley with He is Enough. This is my favorite because I love the simplicity of the shirt as well as the message.

{Q} Elizabeth asks Liza Snyder: “How would you describe your kids’ styles?”
{A} Artistic license reigns in our house! Maysie, our firstborn, began dressing herself around the age of three, and my other two children, Cobb and Ruthie, have followed her lead. They all have their own ideas of what looks “good,” often to my dismay. I’d like to think of our home as a safe place for the kids (and even their friends) to feel celebrated and loved for who they really are. Allowing them the responsibility to dress themselves gives them some creative expression, and it frees all of us up from needless bickering during our morning routine. I’ve been seeking ways to create “margin” in our lives so we have time to really be present with and play with one another…so giving the kids reign over their wardrobes has helped tremendously with that!

{Q} Elizabeth asks the Beaufort Bonnet Company: “What celebrity chid would rock a Beaufort Bonnet best?”
{A} If Princess Kate has a baby girl, she’ll be the quintessential Beaufort Bonnet baby!  We love Kate’s classic style and love the fashion influence she and Prince George have had on the world (aka. the Kate effect).

{Q} Elizabeth asks Zuzii: “Best sales purchase thus far this past holiday season? How about any regretful purchase?”
{A} Strangely we find most of our excitement in buying new shoe making equipment. We bought a new leather sewing machine for our new bags over the holidays and there is seriously nothing better than having the right tool for the job. We also purchased a Soling machine from the son of a retired cobbler. His son was so excited to pass it on to a family-owned footwear manufacturer that he personally delivered it to us from North Carolina. He brought along articles of his father standing by the machine!

{Q} Elizabeth asks Emily McDowell: “
{A} I mean, I’d probably SURVIVE without the “You Can Do It” mug, but now that it exists, I don’t want to.

Wunway Editor’s Picks

By Gina Munsey, Senior Editor Leave a Comment

When it comes to dressing my daughter, I love clothes with spunk and personality. With something a little funny (golden ants!), a little cheeky (bears repeating “Hey. Why?”), and a little off the beaten path (a detachable plush!), WUNWAY fits the bill perfectly. And everything is so comfy and soft, making a WUNWAY wardrobe ideal for all those snow days and vacation days coming up soon.
WUNWAY_Editor's_Picks

WUNWAY EDITOR’S PICKS // 01. Smiley Hearts/Cutie Heart Top | 02. Leonie Dress (Comes with a detachable plush bunny!) | 03. Bear Print Eggy Fleece 2-Piece Set (The text on the top reads, “Hey. Why?” I mean, is that not every little kid’s endless refrain?!) | 04. Lila Tights in Grey + Black Argyle | 05. Black Golden Ant Leggings (I love these adorable not-so-creepy crawlies!)

Copyright © 2023 · Babiekins Magazine | A Trendsetting Kids' Fashion Magazine and Online Community for Parents and Children Alike · Since the Southern California birth of Babiekins in 2010, the magazine has grown from into an internationally-recognized print publication with a global circulation and now a thriving online community. We are more than a kids’ fashion magazine. We search everywhere for inspiration, and go beyond trends to bring you fashion, style, decor, design, books, DIY, parties, and playthings. Our readers look to us to keep up with the best and most up-to-date concepts in the children’s market worldwide. We have an eye for quirk. We’re high-fashion, but we value whimsy over tradition. Playful childhood is more important to us than making kids into copycat adults. We believe life is beautiful, life is valuable, and life changes when you see it through the eyes of a child. We seek to transcend skin color, language and zip codes and bring out the real, wild, magical creativity inherent in every child. And behind Babiekins is an optimistic team of mothers-turned-editors, working from home, often with our own little babiekins climbing on, under and around the desks. We want to encourage you, and challenge you to see something different — something special — in yourself and in this world we all share. Welcome to Babiekins!
