Momkins//Art & Motherhood: Amanda Jane Jones

By Leslie Schor, Senior Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

As we explore art and motherhood, we are so delighted by the number of creative women that we get to know. All so different, but all so dedicated to their craft. Amanda Jane Jones is a graphic designer with an organically modern aesthetic. Former graphic designer and co-creator of Kinfolk Magazine, Amanda has now ventured off and started another inspirational magazine, Define Magazine.

BABIEKINS MAGAZINE|Amanda Jane Jones

When did you start creating?
My mom was the best at always having ways for my brothers and I to be creative. She had a whole closet full of fabric, sequins, markers and paints – all at our disposal! If I was ever bored, I could just head to the closet and get creative.

What does “Art” mean to you?
What a question! I think art can be so many things – from the food we eat, to the clothes we wear, to the chairs we sit in, to the paintings on my walls – I think you can find art in most anything. I think art makes you feel something – it moves you and inspires you.

What is your medium of choice?
I’m a graphic designer, and I love to see my work printed – so much of my work is online, once it hits the paper, it’s so satisfying. The smell, the texture, the weight…

Has motherhood altered your creative process? If so, in what ways?
SO MUCH. For one thing, I’m much faster. Before kids, I could take days to think up a new idea, but now my time is so limited, it almost makes me more creative. My brain works quicker because it has too.

Do you involve your child(ren) in your process, or is it a personal experience?
I try to keep my computer time away from my kids. My husband has a flexible schedule, so he and I get to trade off. When I work, he’s with the kids – when he’s in school, I am. We love it! Sometimes though when I’m editing photos, I’ll let Jane sit on my lap. for some reason, she finds it fascinating.

BABIEKINS MAGAZINE|Amanda Jane JonesBABIEKINS MAGAZINE|Amanda Jane Jones

What do you do when you encounter a creative block?
I go for a walk. We live right along lake Michigan and that fresh air does wonders. I usually get my best ideas while I’m walking. I also have a large selection of books at home that I like to flip through if a walk isn’t an option.

If you could give creative mothers any piece of advice, what would that
be?

Collaborate – meet with people, talk with and learn with people – be a sponge! I’ve done 4 internships – and two of those were after I’d already begun working full time. They were amazing opportunities because I was able to learn the ins and outs of running your my business, designing for clients and creating professional work.

Sleepykins // Frankie’s Nursery

By Mel Spurling, Contributor 1 Comment

Frankie's nursery is strongly inspired by simple Scandinavian decor.  You will absolutely fall in love with Frankie's mum's (Hannah Whitehead) styling and her love and passion for design.  "I love the look of a lot of white in children's spaces and creating a clean, calm and clutter free space for her to sleep. For her room make over I took the 'less is more' approach and removed a lot of things that were in there previously and instead put up simple new pieces such as the beautiful putty pink colour mirror to make the small room look bigger".

Sleepykins // Prints which bring your room to life!

By Mel Spurling, Contributor Leave a Comment

Meet the two creatives behind Sprout and Sparrow who create bold, contemporary art prints which bring colour and life into any little child’s space.  Adi (a former lawyer) and Tash (a graphic designer) are sisters and mums to four cheeky (but gorgeous) kids.

Sprout and Sparrow was born after the two sisters spent hours scouring shops and the internet to find the perfect piece of art for their little ones’. They didn’t want to spend a lot of money and just wanted to find something a little bit different, bold yet colourful.  Nothing really grabbed their attention, so in a brief moment of calm during a play date one morning, they came up with an idea over a pot of peppermint tea: “let’s make our own art!” And so they did! It has become a great creative outlet for them and the world loves them.

Adi and Tash find so much inspiration everywhere.  They love colour. Even in the midst of the monochrome craze they have always maintained bright colourful pieces in their stunning range.  Their new range is predominantly inspired by their kids.  Their ‘Paper plane’ print came about because one of their kids is a little obsessed with paper planes; if you look closely at the print, you will see his words on the page.   Such a beautiful and personal touch.

Every little kid needs a little Sprout and Sparrow in their rooms!

Sleepykins // Eva’s Attic Conversion

By Leslie Schor, Senior Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

We love this cheery attic conversion from one of our readers in Australia.
Here’s what Roshnee had to say about Eva’s space: “We love living in the city. When we had kids, everyone assumed we would move, but we just transformed our terrace house into the ultimate in small space living. We transformed the attic room into a little girls’ hideaway and she loves it. We love the contrast between the bricks that date back to 1890 and the new bright colors.” You can follow Roshnee’s design adventures on Instagram.

Sleepykins // Wild Heart

Sleepykins // Wild Heart Photo-Shoot

In the world of kid’s interiors, I am always hunting for the most perfect pieces to make a room come to life.  Near or far, I stumble across the most amazing and unique small business’s and retailers, who pour their heart and soul into their passion of creative unique and original pieces.  I was lucky enough to be approached by the talented Nicole, the creative behind Zilvi, to work on an exciting collaboration.  Together we created ‘wreath plaques”.  Hand drawn designs by myself, engraved into wood by Zilvi.

‘Wild Heart’ photo shoot showcases a range of kids decor products which I have grown to love and adore, including my collaboration with Zilvi.  There is some serious talent out in this world, which shouldn’t go unnoticed!  I am all about supporting small businesses, be an online retailer, mortar and brick store or a stay home mum who decided to take the world by storm and create an amazing product!  Support small so big dreams can come true.  Support small so we can carry on doing what we love.  #isupportsmall

Sleepykins // Mini Bohème: Lily and Jules’ Bedroom

By Leslie Schor, Senior Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

Guest post by Véronique Saint Germain of Mini Bohème.

Lily and Jules’ bedroom has slowly evolved into what it is now, a little girly, yes, as this is mainly Lily’s space until Jules will move in as well. Their room is filled with mostly vintage items I found and fell in love with. The room also contains small treasured items from her great-grandparents; like the “Lily Special” box, that was in my grandfather’s painting studio and the pink glass jar from my husband’s grandmother.

Lily and I love to craft together, we use our mother/daughter time to make things. Over the Christmas holiday, we made paper maché bunny heads to represent her and her little brother. It took weeks of slow work but now she’s so proud to show it off to everyone that comes over.

I think their room will evolve again as Jules gets older and his personality shines through. For now, he is only three months old and doesn’t sleep there yet, but hopefully soon. I can’t wait to see them play together in their shared space.

Sleepykins // Master JJ’s Room

By Mel Spurling, Contributor Leave a Comment

Babiekins Magazine | Master JJ's Space
J is for JJ.

JJ’s room is influenced by the current Scandinavian trends, a little monochrome madness and some of natures own – wood.   I love it when eclectic comes together!

His room brings a sense of calm, relaxation and peacefulness.  For me. themed rooms are really not my style; I love designing rooms which can grow with a child & keep them company for years to come.  Sometimes, you have to agree, less is more.

My favourite item in JJ”s room has to be his polaroid photo feature, hanging from a wood branch which I collected from the  park.

A few items I know and love: White J letter light from Little Letter Lights, Badger handmade felted organic wool rug from This Modern Life, Fine Little Day Gran cushion, Uashmama grey paper bag.

Sleepykins//Piper’s Dreamy Room

By Leslie Schor, Senior Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

Guest post by Ashley Williamson.

Piper’s room has a mix of vintage and new toys and furniture with loads of girly touches and nostalgia for childhood. My girls love playing in this room. Endless tea parties, setting up Sylvanian families, quiet reading and playing dress-up. Piper is a real bowerbird and is constantly bringing home shells, rocks, nuts, anything she can find from her adventures and these are tucked around the room, along with fairy glitter and little treasures.

There is no theme, but in our home we try to keep things around that are beautiful, useful, or meaningful and Piper’s space definitely is the child version of this!

She is four years old so needs space to stretch her imagination. A lot of our parenting ideals reside in Steiner philosophies, with toys being simple and often made of natural materials, allowing the girls to have open ended play. Piper is able to disappear in her imagination in this space for hours. Our little dreamer!

Copyright © 2021 · Babiekins Magazine | A Trendsetting Kids' Fashion Magazine and Online Community for Parents and Children Alike · Since the Southern California birth of Babiekins in 2010, the magazine has grown from into an internationally-recognized print publication with a global circulation and now a thriving online community. We are more than a kids’ fashion magazine. We search everywhere for inspiration, and go beyond trends to bring you fashion, style, decor, design, books, DIY, parties, and playthings. Our readers look to us to keep up with the best and most up-to-date concepts in the children’s market worldwide. We have an eye for quirk. We’re high-fashion, but we value whimsy over tradition. Playful childhood is more important to us than making kids into copycat adults. We believe life is beautiful, life is valuable, and life changes when you see it through the eyes of a child. We seek to transcend skin color, language and zip codes and bring out the real, wild, magical creativity inherent in every child. And behind Babiekins is an optimistic team of mothers-turned-editors, working from home, often with our own little babiekins climbing on, under and around the desks. We want to encourage you, and challenge you to see something different — something special — in yourself and in this world we all share. Welcome to Babiekins!
