A Magical Mermaid Birthday Party

By Liz Jacob, Copy Editor Leave a Comment

“The sea, once it casts it’s spell, holds one in it’s net of wonder forever”
Jacques Cousteau

There is something extremely magical about creating a child’s birthday party; the planning, the creativity, the thought process and the fun. When my daughter came to me with the grand idea of bringing a magical mermaid party to life I was on board and immediately let me creativity kick in. Before I start planning, I always like to pick a color palette and I thought soft pastels would be the perfect hue to accent an underwater themed celebration. While I love hosting events at my house, it’s not always conducive to a large group of children so we opted for a quaint, historical restaurant located in the heart of our downtown, which also happens to be our families restaurant. I set up one large table that would be used for eating, another medium table for the arts and crafts and then a small table for the face-painting station. Since I was set on using a balloon garland as my statement piece, I decided to keep the other decorations simple and natural. The cake itself made a wonderful centerpiece and I added seashells, succulents and confetti to the tables. Each girl received a starfish wand that my daughter and I assembled together. This would also make a wonderful craft for the party but instead we painted sand dollars.

In addition to the wands, guests took home a shell goody-bag filled with shell necklaces, bath bombs, nautical tattoos and hair ties. We set up an easy DIY photo station by hanging a white sheet and adding fish net and garland. To save time on the cake I ordered a simple, two-layered round cake with pink drip icing from a local bakery. I’ll be honest, this was the only glitch in this magical party. When I picked the cake up it wasn’t the shade of pink I requested, the mermaid tail was stuck in the middle and they added white flowers, which I did not request. I quickly ran to the craft store, purchased some shell molds, shell and nautical stickers and then picked up macaroons at the grocery store. I made a couple batches of chocolates using white chocolate and food coloring. These were so easy to make and they added a nice element of depth to the cake! I then added the macaroons, the stickers (I attached them to toothpicks) and a sprinkle of edible gold flakes. I was actually happy with how the cake turned out and used the leftover chocolates to decorate a batch of cupcakes.

Babiekins Magazine | DIY Play Cake by Mer Mag

To make this DIY play cake you will need:

  • The lower portion of a cylindrical oatmeal box. We cut ours to be about 5 1/4″ high
  • small extra sheets of cardboard (or sides from cereal boxes so it’s the same fiberboard as the oatmeal box)
  • 4 wooden dowels each cut to 3″ high for the candles
  • Duct tape in various colors
  • hot glue gun and glue

To make this cake:

  1. Cut out a triangle “slice” from one side of the oatmeal box.
  2. Fill in the sides of the inside of the cake as well as the slice you just cut out. Tape together to hold.
  3. Cut out a shape for the top of the cake based on the bottom base . Tape together to hold.
  4. Decorate the cake by covering in duct tape. We chose white for the exterior and pink for the interior. Cut a couple of stripes of white for the interior to indicate cake layers. We also cut up an assortment of colorful triangles to suggest sprinkles atop the cake.
  5. Cover each wooden dowel candle in a different color of duct tape.
  6. Cut out thin strips of white duct tape and coil around each candle.
  7. To make the wick of each candle, roll together a bit of duct tape, about 1/2″ high. Glue wick to top of each candle with hot glue.
  8. Using hot glue, glue on each candle around the top of the cake, being sure to center one of them atop the cut out slice of cake. (you could also use sticky velcro of you wanted to candles to come on and off). Let dry.

1st Birthday Party Guest Gifts

Hi, it’s Ashley from neutral hue, here to share a fun 1st birthday party idea for your little boy!

We had the most wonderful Woodland Animal celebration for my son Wyatt’s 1st birthday party! He’s all boy and his nursery is decorated in a neutral palette of antlers, linen & burlap, and deer wood-cut prints so it was the perfect extension of how we welcomed him into the world a short year ago.

The adorable “Frances the Bear” invitations from Rifle Paper Co. set the perfect tone from the start and were the inspiration for the party {along with their adorable ABC poster print}. As always, I gathered things I loved on this Pinterest Board, just for Wyatt’s birthday to keep everything creative and in order.

I found a variety of tiny felted and bottlebrush woodland animals and used them to hold little kraft flags on toothpicks to mark the food and other dishes we had for guests. And, used wooden utensils, mason jars, rustic wooden serving pieces and platters to also help set the tone.

One of my favorite elements of the party was Wyatt’s ever-important smash cake {and a few other cakes we made for the guests, of course!} that were made-from-scratch chocolate cakes with a white butter cream icing. Set atop each cake was finely crumbled oreos with little evergreen trees from the craft section. They came out even better than I had envisioned, and Wyatt loved his first taste of dessert!

Our guests left with a little take-home gift that included some of Wyatt’s favorite things, a cute polka-dot kraft bag with animal crackers and a little wooden shaker to add some fun.

We loved making a celebration of our special guy’s 1st birthday party. What themes have you hosted or considered for your little boys?
