Sleepykins // Frankie’s Nursery

By Mel Spurling, Contributor 1 Comment

Frankie's nursery is strongly inspired by simple Scandinavian decor.  You will absolutely fall in love with Frankie's mum's (Hannah Whitehead) styling and her love and passion for design.  "I love the look of a lot of white in children's spaces and creating a clean, calm and clutter free space for her to sleep. For her room make over I took the 'less is more' approach and removed a lot of things that were in there previously and instead put up simple new pieces such as the beautiful putty pink colour mirror to make the small room look bigger".

Sleepykins // Prints which bring your room to life!

By Mel Spurling, Contributor Leave a Comment

Meet the two creatives behind Sprout and Sparrow who create bold, contemporary art prints which bring colour and life into any little child’s space.  Adi (a former lawyer) and Tash (a graphic designer) are sisters and mums to four cheeky (but gorgeous) kids.

Sprout and Sparrow was born after the two sisters spent hours scouring shops and the internet to find the perfect piece of art for their little ones’. They didn’t want to spend a lot of money and just wanted to find something a little bit different, bold yet colourful.  Nothing really grabbed their attention, so in a brief moment of calm during a play date one morning, they came up with an idea over a pot of peppermint tea: “let’s make our own art!” And so they did! It has become a great creative outlet for them and the world loves them.

Adi and Tash find so much inspiration everywhere.  They love colour. Even in the midst of the monochrome craze they have always maintained bright colourful pieces in their stunning range.  Their new range is predominantly inspired by their kids.  Their ‘Paper plane’ print came about because one of their kids is a little obsessed with paper planes; if you look closely at the print, you will see his words on the page.   Such a beautiful and personal touch.

Every little kid needs a little Sprout and Sparrow in their rooms!

Sleepykins // Avie’s dreamy room.

By Mel Spurling, Contributor 2 Comments

Now here’s a little girl’s room which captivated me at first glance.  Avie’s room.  The beautiful daughter of the creative and inspirational mumma, Bek Halliday.

Bek has always had a passion for interior styling.  “Children’s spaces are definitely the most fun to decorate! You can truly be imaginative and create something magical. I think we all want our kids to grow up surrounded by wonder and a little magic”.

Avie’s room is ever evolving (due to her mumma’s obsession with decorating!).  Bek’s  is always drawn to the same soft pastel tones.   She wanted to create a pretty space which wasn’t overly ‘girly’. Bek loves Scandinavian inspired kids rooms and when designing little Avie’s room, she had a fair idea  of what she wanted and also searched the internet and Instagram for inspirational ideas.

Bek’s favourite item in Avie’s room is her painted wall feature with all the bits and bobs on it.   Bek was so scared to steer away from the safe white walls, although, the risk definitely paid off.

Avie’s favourite item in her room is her bed!  She tends to jump on it… A LOT!  “Avie is only four, so I don’t think she really minds what I do with it [her room] for now.  Thankfully!

When shopping for her room, there were so many amazing stores that Bek found through Instagram. “This is definitely where I found my favourite pieces for her space.  I like to splurge on pieces that I just can’t live without, and source similar pieces to items that were out of my price range.  For example, I wanted a bed that I saw at Domayne, although, Avie’s bed is actually from Fantastic Furniture for a quarter of the price.”

Bek also shops on Etsy and scouts local markets and mainstream shops such as Country Road, Cotton On Kids and Typo for fun and quirky pieces; Ikea is a go to  place for shelving and frames.

“Sometimes if I can’t find just the right thing, I make it myself. This is how I started my art business. I love to create, I always have. Painting is a strong passion that I have wanted to fulfil for so long.  I love the satisfaction of looking at one of my pieces and saying ‘hey, you know what, that’s actually pretty good!’   Ten years ago I wouldn’t of had the confidence to pursue my dream. I guess after having my two babes, the time is just right now”.

Sleepykins // Nursery Inspiration

When it comes to decorating a newborn’s room, the options are endless.  TiniTrader is one of my recommended places to buy or sell any new or preloved products for your baby, toddler or kids.  I was lucky enough to be a part of Tinitrader’s style series looks; creating and styling a unique nursery look from a selection of their products.  I captured some of the most amazing products, hoping to inspire one and all.

Sleepykins // Wild Heart Photo-Shoot

In the world of kid’s interiors, I am always hunting for the most perfect pieces to make a room come to life.  Near or far, I stumble across the most amazing and unique small business’s and retailers, who pour their heart and soul into their passion of creative unique and original pieces.  I was lucky enough to be approached by the talented Nicole, the creative behind Zilvi, to work on an exciting collaboration.  Together we created ‘wreath plaques”.  Hand drawn designs by myself, engraved into wood by Zilvi.

‘Wild Heart’ photo shoot showcases a range of kids decor products which I have grown to love and adore, including my collaboration with Zilvi.  There is some serious talent out in this world, which shouldn’t go unnoticed!  I am all about supporting small businesses, be an online retailer, mortar and brick store or a stay home mum who decided to take the world by storm and create an amazing product!  Support small so big dreams can come true.  Support small so we can carry on doing what we love.  #isupportsmall

Sleepykins // Master JJ’s Room

By Mel Spurling, Contributor Leave a Comment

Babiekins Magazine | Master JJ's Space
J is for JJ.

JJ’s room is influenced by the current Scandinavian trends, a little monochrome madness and some of natures own – wood.   I love it when eclectic comes together!

His room brings a sense of calm, relaxation and peacefulness.  For me. themed rooms are really not my style; I love designing rooms which can grow with a child & keep them company for years to come.  Sometimes, you have to agree, less is more.

My favourite item in JJ”s room has to be his polaroid photo feature, hanging from a wood branch which I collected from the  park.

A few items I know and love: White J letter light from Little Letter Lights, Badger handmade felted organic wool rug from This Modern Life, Fine Little Day Gran cushion, Uashmama grey paper bag.

Sleepykins // Billie’s Magical Room

By Mel Spurling, Contributor 5 Comments

For those who have yet to meet me – hello!   My friends call me Mel, my family Melina and my two little birdie’s “mummy”.  I am the interior stylist and designer behind Hello Little Birdie.

I wanted to share with you one of my little birdie’s rooms.  Let’s step into the world of Billie’s room; a room inspired by the song “somewhere over the rainbow”.  I wanted to create a room “where dreams you dream of really do come true”.  A magical little space, which would last a lifetime… A little piece of heaven, where Billie can explore, grow, be inspired, create memories and most of all have fun in!  A little space “where troubles melt like lemon drops”.

Much like myself, Billie has an eye for detail, so I cannot take ALL the credit for designing her room; she definitely had her fair share of opinions and called some shots!

Babiekins Magazine | Billie's Magical Space

The excitement of Billie’s room begins before you enter her room, showcased on her bedroom door a custom heart mini name flag, created by the talented Nicole owner of Zilvi.

Babiekins Magazine | Billie's Magical Space

The little girl print is one of my all time favourites by Australian artist Sara Winfield.  Sara’s  illustrations and paintings are truly magical, I love how she captures emotion in her art.  This piece was ideal for Billie’s room as the mint background compliments the the buffet drawers.  Drawers were a little DIY project, purchased on ebay, restored & painted.

The colour palettes of gold, natural wood and mint really tied everything together, keeping the room soft, yet natural and soothing.  The gold “hello” sign is from Naughts and Crosses.  It was originally pink and I gave it a gold spray over. Love it!   For storage I couldn’t resist the Uashmama gold metallic bag and Tellkiddo paper bag – perfectly ideal for all the toys that need to be tucked away at night.

Babiekins Magazine | Billie's Magical Space

Billie and I were looking at beds and when we came across the Incy Interiors Mia bed, we instantly knew it was the one!  Hanging on the wall to compliment the Ferm Living wallpaper is a Frankie and Finch golden luxe weaving.  Oh my, this is a sight for sore eyes.  It is without out doubt one of the most stunning pieces I have ever laid my eyes on.

Billie loves to read and I adore The Family Love Tree, so when it was time to create a little reading nook, I instantly knew nothing could replace their Love Chair.  It was always love at first sight, I was just waiting on the right moment to pounce.  The stool is also from The Family Love Tree.  Looks fantastic with the Lapin and Me Lamp from This Modern Life.

In my eyes, a room is never complete without a custom phrase that depicts a special message between two people.  The matte gold wall decal was designed by myself for my little birdie. It’s a little saying we whisper to each other, every night.

When designing rooms, my vision goes deep beyond today and tomorrow; I love creating spaces, which can grow with children and incorporate anything unique and original, which pushes the boundaries.  I tend to steer away from too many baby products and focus on drawing in elements from every day living and home wares; blending in items which appeal to adults as much as children.  Getting the balance right creates the ultimate harmony.

Copyright © 2023 · Babiekins Magazine | A Trendsetting Kids' Fashion Magazine and Online Community for Parents and Children Alike · Since the Southern California birth of Babiekins in 2010, the magazine has grown from into an internationally-recognized print publication with a global circulation and now a thriving online community. We are more than a kids’ fashion magazine. We search everywhere for inspiration, and go beyond trends to bring you fashion, style, decor, design, books, DIY, parties, and playthings. Our readers look to us to keep up with the best and most up-to-date concepts in the children’s market worldwide. We have an eye for quirk. We’re high-fashion, but we value whimsy over tradition. Playful childhood is more important to us than making kids into copycat adults. We believe life is beautiful, life is valuable, and life changes when you see it through the eyes of a child. We seek to transcend skin color, language and zip codes and bring out the real, wild, magical creativity inherent in every child. And behind Babiekins is an optimistic team of mothers-turned-editors, working from home, often with our own little babiekins climbing on, under and around the desks. We want to encourage you, and challenge you to see something different — something special — in yourself and in this world we all share. Welcome to Babiekins!
