The Wish Tree by Kyo Maclear and illustrated by Chris Turnham has quickly become a family favorite. A story about Charles, a young boy that wants to find a wishing tree. With his trusty companion Boggan, they head out together on a journey to find the wishing tree and along the way learn a couple lessons on helping others.

Here is a little sneak peek into our interview with author Kyo Maclear.

{Q} “The Wish Tree” encourages exploration, giving, and celebrating the unexpected. As you look toward future books, what are the main messages you desire to relate to young readers through storytelling?

{A} What I hope to relate is less an overt message than a general sensibility. I think we’re living in a fairly disconnected time (despite our relentless digital connectivity) and I’d like to model a sense of connection and care–care for art, for story, care for unbalanced worlds, for non-human life, care for humor and community, for passion and creativity—and, always, care and openness in the face of the unexpected.

You can read the rest of the interview in Babiekins Print Issue 9!

STORYKINS :: Reading Time

By Graciela Leave a Comment

Our little babiekin loves when we are reading books together. Gabriel never sits still for a second, but when it’s reading time he can sit still longer than a half an hour. Reading books is really a daily activity in our home. We have regular times to read, especially before naps and bedtime. This all started when Gabriel was only 6 months old. My older sister (she’s a teacher) told me that reading books is one of the best ways to learn a language. In combination with the wish to create a bedtime routine for Gabriel, we started reading books together.

But the most important thing is that we always having so much fun when we read books together. So we created his own little “library” in his room on his own bookshelf. We have a wide variety of books and we let Gabriel participate as much as possible. He picks his own books he wants to read, we let him to finish the sentence, read the pictures etc.

Copyright © 2023 · Babiekins Magazine | A Trendsetting Kids' Fashion Magazine and Online Community for Parents and Children Alike · Since the Southern California birth of Babiekins in 2010, the magazine has grown from into an internationally-recognized print publication with a global circulation and now a thriving online community. We are more than a kids’ fashion magazine. We search everywhere for inspiration, and go beyond trends to bring you fashion, style, decor, design, books, DIY, parties, and playthings. Our readers look to us to keep up with the best and most up-to-date concepts in the children’s market worldwide. We have an eye for quirk. We’re high-fashion, but we value whimsy over tradition. Playful childhood is more important to us than making kids into copycat adults. We believe life is beautiful, life is valuable, and life changes when you see it through the eyes of a child. We seek to transcend skin color, language and zip codes and bring out the real, wild, magical creativity inherent in every child. And behind Babiekins is an optimistic team of mothers-turned-editors, working from home, often with our own little babiekins climbing on, under and around the desks. We want to encourage you, and challenge you to see something different — something special — in yourself and in this world we all share. Welcome to Babiekins!
