Styling Denim & Denim with Pops of Whimsy

By Leslie Schor, Senior Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

Utilitarian and iconic, denim is a personal favorite. Manufacturing methods are so advanced and varied, denim no longer has to be thick and stiff.  I love that it gets better with each wash and wear. While styling denim on denim, I prefer for there to be a variance in the tones and color of the denim’s wash. To break up the indigo hues, I incorporated some hints of yellow, red, and orange. For some quirk, I added whimsical notes like 3D butterflies, tiger socks, and a bucket hat. Denim is such a great base for any look or style. There is no wrong way to style it!

My boys are pretty excited that there are only 3 (t h r e e !!!) more sleeps till Christmas. This year was a pretty special one as we cut down our very first Christmas tree, made treats for our friends, made our own wrapping paper and got to spend a couple days in the mountains with snow (which was Cruz very first time really playing in all that white powder). It’s been fun and we have made loads of memories!

One thing we love to do every year as a family is to cook a traditional Brazilian meal for our Christmas dinner. This includes feijoada (brazilian beans), rice, churrasco (brazilian meat), salad with palm hearts and traditional potato salad! My boys enjoy helping me cook, learning about Brazil and learning new words in portuguese! It’s a great way to engage our boys in their Brazilian heritage!

But one of my most favorite parts of winter is being able to wear warm sweaters, fuzzy hats and boots! This year we partnered with Gap Kids to show some of our favorite items for boys! Each of my children (except Cruz) picked out what they thought best represented their own style!

Here is what they picked!

Christian (oldest) : Plaid Ripstop Fleece Pullover  |  Geometric Fair Isle Beanie & Convertible Mittens

Carter : Moose Shawlneck Zipo Cardigan  |  1969 Twill-lined Straight Jeans  |  The cap Carter is using is sold out but we love this Bla Bla Statement pom-pom Beanie and this Furry Trapper Hat

Cruz : Plaid Shirt |  1969 Fleece-lined Fit Jeansz  |  Plaid Quilted Vest  |   Printed Socks | Distressed hi-top Sneakers

Though comparatively mild to the rest of our Great White North neighbours, Vancouver’s West Coast winters are no joke. So, when the sunshine decides to turn up, the city and its inhabitants get that much needed vitamin D boost. Reenergized and revitalized, the boys and I take advantage of outdoor urban life as much as we can. Aimlessly wandering, we naturally started our day at the park. Fresh air and fun times always leaves us a bit famished. We eventually found ourselves down at Granville Island for a little refuelling. Sitting outside on the pier not only allows us to take in the beautiful waterfront views but keeps the little ones occupied just enough for me to squeeze in a few bites myself. If all else fails, they also have each other to keep occupied. Unfortunately for Mase, that doesn’t always work out in his favour!

Taking inspiration from some of the grey days you might be experiencing as well, my little man is fitted from chin to Chelsea boot in grey! A clean monochromatic outfit with his button down and grey denims. I’ve added a pop of colour with a beanie in Pantone’s colour of the year, Marsala, to keep everything fresh and fun. Finished with his black Chelsea boots, Carter’s ready to follow his beloved bunny friends out and down the rabbit hole!

Craftykins // DIY Flower Crown

By Liz Jacob, Copy Editor Leave a Comment

Easter is right around the corner and we are doing a few last minute preparations. A good cleaning of the house, baking of treats, gathering goodies for the baskets and, of course, laying out the Easter outfits. The season of spring calls for soft colors, pastels and lots of flowers so I decided to add this element of nature into our Easter style.

Follow the simple steps below to make your own flower crown for Easter or any occasion!

flower crown 2

You will Need:
faux flowers or fresh (I used nice faux flowers for this crown)
green florist tape
green or natural florist wire
scissors or shears
wire cutters

STEP 1: Gather your supplies! Cut flowers from the stems, leaving about an inch or so to work with.

STEP 2: Take your floral wire and make a circle shaping it to fit your head. I used two wires. Wrap the extra wire around to make a strong circle base.

STEP 3: Begin to arrange your flowers. Use the green florist tape to secure the flowers in place. You can either set out the flowers how you would like them arranged or just work as you go.

STEP 4: Continue taping and wrapping the flowers in place. Get creative and remember, there is no wrong way to arrange the flowers.

STEP 6: Once you are happy with your crown double check that all the flowers are securely taped in place and then you’re done! This delicate flower crown also makes a cute decoration to hang or place on a bed post. Happy wearing!

Fashionkins // Five Little Monkeys

By Gina Munsey, Senior Editor Leave a Comment

Everyone, I think, has heard of Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed — but did you know about another story about the five little monkeys called Don’t Wake Up Mama? It’s a fun (and suspenseful) book, following the five little monkeys as they work together to make a birthday cake for mama while she’s asleep. Of course, as they are monkeys, you can imagine how successful this effort is. Don’t Wake up Mama! is a humorous tale that will make children and parents giggle. And here’s how you can dress your littles just like these adorable creatures —

Copyright © 2021 · Babiekins Magazine | A Trendsetting Kids' Fashion Magazine and Online Community for Parents and Children Alike · Since the Southern California birth of Babiekins in 2010, the magazine has grown from into an internationally-recognized print publication with a global circulation and now a thriving online community. We are more than a kids’ fashion magazine. We search everywhere for inspiration, and go beyond trends to bring you fashion, style, decor, design, books, DIY, parties, and playthings. Our readers look to us to keep up with the best and most up-to-date concepts in the children’s market worldwide. We have an eye for quirk. We’re high-fashion, but we value whimsy over tradition. Playful childhood is more important to us than making kids into copycat adults. We believe life is beautiful, life is valuable, and life changes when you see it through the eyes of a child. We seek to transcend skin color, language and zip codes and bring out the real, wild, magical creativity inherent in every child. And behind Babiekins is an optimistic team of mothers-turned-editors, working from home, often with our own little babiekins climbing on, under and around the desks. We want to encourage you, and challenge you to see something different — something special — in yourself and in this world we all share. Welcome to Babiekins!
