When our daughters expressed interest in helping us out around the house, we thought providing them with a real-life looking kitchen would be a fun way for them to pretend during play time. Imaginative play can help children identify with the adult world, but is also beneficial for social and emotional development, too. When I found this used kitchen at a thrift store, I knew it would make the perfect DIY project!

With some gorgeous blue Behr paint and some metallic spray paint I picked up at Target — the transformation instantly took place. I used marble wallpaper from Livettes to cover the countertops, and then just added some real plastic plates, bowls and cups. The project only cost me a total of $25, but has brought countless hours of joy for all three of my kids!

Craftykins // Pumpkin Jack-o-lantern Surprise Ball DIY

By Ruby Leave a Comment

pumpkin surprise ball DIY-4

Halloween is all about about tricks and treats, and this pumpkin surprise ball is definitely a trick-or-treat. Make one for a gift — or make a bunch for a Halloween party. Put in some creepy trinkets, as well as some sweet treats, and children will love unrolling it to uncover what’s hidden inside.

Pumpkin Jack-o-lantern Surprise Ball DIY

Total time: 30 minutes

Supplies:
10 trinkets
Crepe paper streamers, orange and brown
Black construction paper
Craft glue
Scissors

Directions:
1. Start with something ball shaped in the center ,and wrap with crepe paper until completely covered. Wrap the item completely before moving onto the next object.

2. Continue to wrap the remaining trinkets, with largest items getting wrapped first, and leaving smaller items to be wrapped last. As you wrap each item, shift the angle of the streamer, so that you overlap each layer little by little. Continue to wrap each one, pulling tightly (but gently) at the streamer, so that it is is taut and smooth, and the trinket stays in place. You’ll want a pumpkin shape, so be mindful of how your ball is being shaped as you wrap.

3. Once you wrapped your last object, cut the streamer and glue in place.

4. Cut out a tiny jack-o-lantern face from your black construction paper and glue onto the front of the pumpkin.

5. Cut out a small piece of brown crepe streamer and roll to create the stem. Glue on top of the pumpkin.

Craftykins // Tooth Fairy Pillow DIY

By Ruby 1 Comment

tooth fairy pillow // babiekins mag
Happy National Tooth Fairy Day! To celebrate, I have this easy sewing project for you. This sweet pillow is perfect for little teeth and makes the Tooth Fairy’s job much easier at night. No longer does she have to go digging under the pillow, hoping not to wake the wee one. This way, all she has to do is pick up the tooth in the pocket, and in exchange, leave her dollar bills (or change). Make this with your child to celebrate their first tooth coming out or make it as a gift to surprise them. Regardless, it will be perfect for every night the Tooth Fairy has to pay a visit!

crepe paper pencil surprise

Can you believe summer whizzed on by and kids are headed back to school?! I simply cannot! Let’s get the children excited to head back to school with this Crepe Paper Pencil Surprise! Inspired by the Crepe Carrot Surprise that I made one Easter, this fun gift will definitely get your kids enthused about the start of the new school year. You can fill it with some pretty school supplies or maybe some sweet treats to celebrate your little one’s new school adventures. This would even make a great gift for a teacher! I wouldn’t mind receiving it loaded with chocolate treats; chocolate definitely helps me get through the school year.

Crepe Paper Pencil Surprise

Total time: 30 minutes

Supplies:
Crepe paper streamers, various colors to get the pencil look
Paper towel cardboard roll
Small piece of pink construction paper
Brown cardstock
Glue
Scissors

Directions:
1. With the brown card stock (or can use a stiff paper bag), cut out a triangle with a rounded base (similar shape to 1/4 of a pie) and use that to create a cone. Glue the sides together to form the cone. Place on top of one end of the paper roll, and glue the cone and roll together. Add a dab of glue as you go and proceed to wrap the cone with beige crepe paper streamer.

2. Add dabs of glue as you go, continue to wrap the roll with yellow crepe paper streamer to create the body of the pencil.

3. Once about 2 1/2″ from the top, wrap with grey/light blue crepe paper streamer stopping about 1/4″ from the top of the roll.

4. Fill your roll with surprises! Since children are heading back to school, put in pencils, markers, erasers, and some clips.

5. Using the pink construction paper, cut out a circle slightly larger than the roll opening. Line the edges of the circle with glue, cover the opening, press down the edges of the circle to secure to the top of the roll.

6. Proceed to cover the top of the pencil with the pink crepe paper streamer, glueing as you go to secure.

How To Mend A Heart by Sara Gillingham + Craftykins

By Kellie Diguangco, Former Contributor Leave a Comment

cover

Sara Gillingham is back with another beautiful and encouraging book for little readers. This sweet book tells you how to mend a heart but don’t let the hearts fool you, this is not a Valentine’s Day book but one you can enjoy all year.

tomend

“To mend a heart, you need gentle hands, the right tools, and lots of patches.”

Follow a little boy as his stuffed elephant falls apart, and he finds ways to repair it. Once repaired, it doesn’t stay that way, and he must keep finding ways to fix it. Although we would love to protect our little ones from heartbreak, we know in life this is not possible. The best thing we can do is equip them with the right tools, to handle heartache and move on. I am the biggest fan of children’s books. Children are able to understand complicated emotions.

endpage

It is much better to show them real emotions and how we deal with them, rather to show them books where there are never any problems and everyone is happy all the time. Raising well adjusted children, will happen when we deal with real life issues. Luckily we have gentle, sweet books like How To Mend A Heart to guide our children through.

theheart

Sara Gillingham is an amazing author, illustrator and person. You can find more of her books here , they are always encouraging, lovely and empowering for children.

With Valentines day just around the corner, we used Sara’s book as inspiration for a little paper heart garland.

cookieandgarland

Tools Needed:

Water color paper

Hole Punch

Scissors

Oil pastels

Water color

Ribbon

tools

I pre-cut the shape of a heart and let my son trace it onto water color with oil pastels. Once he was done, we looked at the pages of the book and talked about the different patterns on the hearts. Once he had traced them, and designed them with the oil pastel, he used the water color to paint over the whole heart. Oil and water resist each other, so the water pulls away from the oil and you can see the nice drawing through the paint.

painting

Once the hearts were dry, we cut them, and used a hole punch to make the holes on each side of the hearts for threading through the garland.

It is a fun little read and make, and fun way to enjoy Valentines day together.

Craftykins//Spooky Webs

By Leslie Schor, Senior Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

Guest post by Natalie Walton.

One of the craft projects my kids enjoyed most at Christmas-time was making paper snowflakes, so I thought I would adapt that idea for Halloween this year. Instead of using white paper, we used black and instead of cutting out triangles from the folded paper we cut out rectangles. To give it that extra special decorative touch at the end, they were hung from a branch and we added pine cones that we painted black.

Materials
Paper
Scissors
Twine
Branch, optional
Pine cones, optional

Instructions
1. Fold an A4 piece of black paper in half four times. Cut off the top so that it is all one length.
2. Snip off the pointy end and cut rectangle shapes along the length of the paper.
3. Open and hang with twine – on a painted black branch, as we did. Or you could tape to your windows for a different effect. This would look fun if you had candles in your windows too.
