FASHIONKINS :: Jumping Into Summer

This weekend marks the beginning of summer in our household. We’ll finally put on those new swim suits we’ve been eagerly waiting to wear. We’ll pack our tote bag with soft towels and plenty of sunscreen. We’ll shed our layers and embrace the casual style.

These are just a few items that have our name all over them. Well, Jessica’s name at least. I love an all American look. Think red, white and blue. Baseball caps and hoodies. Trendy shades and long locks of hair. How about you? Do you have a signature look? A particular color scheme? A favorite style?

MOMKINS :: A Break in the Routine to Recharge!

Sometimes, I take life too seriously. I get too wrapped up in what there is to do and what hasn’t been done yet, and I get stressed out. (If you know me, you’re waving your hands in mock horror, “You? High-strung? Ohhh what a shock!”) It doesn’t come as a hugely surprising confession, I know. And of course, it goes with the territory that I’m really bad at relaxing (Just ask my mom. Or my husband. Before I met him, I had a hard time watching movies all the way through! I’d watch half, and then wander off to do something that just HAD to be done.)

But I’m learning. I’m learning it’s not all about accomplishments. It’s not all about what I can achieve. I’m not getting graded on this life! When the stress creeps up on me because I’m perfectionistically attacking my to-do list, discouraged that it’s not getting done fast enough or perfectly enough, I’ve learned that it’s probably time to step back, stop what I’m doing, and turn my attention to something else. And not just another item on my list. Something different, something fun, and dare I say, relaxing? A break in the routine — like jetting out of the house at lunchtime to have frozen yogurt instead — does wonders for realigning one’s perspective. There’s just something about different surroundings that can put you in a completely different mood, don’t you agree?

How do you get back on track when you find yourself being too high-strung? (I can’t be the only relaxation-challenged person among us!)

SLEEPYKINS :: Jessica’s Whimsical Bright Room

For Jessica’s room I wanted to focus on brightness and allowing the sun to shine in on her space. I am always a fan of white walls so I knew I could add pops of color here and there. I also wanted her room to be versatile so it could grow with her as she became older. I kept this in mind while purchasing items such as curtains, duvets, rugs and art.

While we still have the hardwood floor to put down, I’m happy with how her little room came together. To save space and give a feeling of openness I turned her walk-in closet into a play area. It’s a great place to tuck herself away and get lost in her own world of imagination. A simple kitchen set becomes a restaurant and a rack of shoes a street side boutique. This is exactly what I had in mind when planning this room. A whimsical space where the creative mind can let go. A place to play. A place to create.

This week for a few days I’ve had the pleasure to remember what its like to have my oldest at home with me. He’s been under the weather, but nothing gets his creative spirit down that’s for sure! I’ve come accustom to his imaginative ways & the fantastic charisma that is “Crew” for many years now. Its fun playing dress up & forgetting you have to be a grown up for a while.

Luvkins :: Favorite Summer Flip Flops

With summer around the corner I am already boxing up our winter coats and pants and trading them for shorts and flip flops. I am a mom of 2 little boys and so dressing them isn’t a big problem. Put some board shorts and a tee on them and they are ready to go….until you get to their feet. Here in California we are lucky enough to wear flip flops 90% of the year and with 2 active boys its just the easiest thing for us to have around. They slip them on and we are on our way! One struggle we have had though is to find them the perfect flip flop because they have wider than normal feet (I call them my hobbits). When I went to Brasil in 2003 I fell in love with the flip flops that are widly popular now in the USA- Havaianas. Since then they are the only thing I buy and put on my kids feet. They are made of Brasilian rubber which make them super flexible and breathable.

They carry an array of designs for kids (how cool are the Batman flip flops?), babies (love the strap in the back which will ensure they won’t fall off your little one’s foot) and then awesome designs for him and her! I am dying over these here!
