What do you do when the rain keeps you inside? Well, in our house, we raid the recycle bin and get creative. I’ve had a large box waiting to be used and we finally decided what to make, a dollhouse. We stuck with neutral decorations since both Josh and Jess like to play with it. Jess uses her wooden dolls and Josh uses legos and dinosaurs. Whatever works, right?
Have an adult cut a cardboard box into the shape you desire. We decided to make a two story house so I cut an additional piece of cardboard then taped it in place. For the roof I cut two pieces of cardboard, angled them together and then taped them at the angle and where they connected to the house. If you want a door or window use an x acto knife to cut out the shape. For the door cut three sides (bottom, side, top) and lightly run your blade along the other side (do not cut) and then fold back.
Now comes the fun part, decorating! We used scrap paper, old material and stickers to make carpets, curtains, wallpaper and artwork. To get the kids involved I let them pick the decorations and help glue them in place.
You can add as little or as much as you like. The most important part is to have fun!
