Coop Dreams and Family Scenes: Meet the Chicken Coop Company’s Creative Flock (Part One)

By Priscila Barros, Editor-in-Chief Leave a Comment

Backyard chickens are no longer a novelty. They are part of a growing shift toward more intentional family living where food, responsibility, and connection all start right outside the back door. With the right coop, raising chickens can feel approachable, beautiful, and seamlessly woven into everyday life.

For families, a backyard flock offers more than fresh eggs. It creates shared routines, teaches kids responsibility and empathy, and brings a sense of purpose to daily rhythms. A well designed coop is not just a place for chickens to live. It is an extension of the home and a reflection of how modern families are choosing to live.

We sat down with The Chicken Coop Company to talk about how their thoughtfully designed coops make backyard chicken keeping accessible for families everywhere. From beginner friendly options to designs that balance function and aesthetics, they are helping redefine what backyard living can look like today.

Meet the Makers

Can you tell us a little about how your company got started and what inspired you to create such beautiful, functional coops?

The Chicken Coop Company started in 2013 when we noticed a huge gap in the market. Backyard chickens were becoming more common, especially in suburban areas, but most available coops still looked and functioned like traditional farm sheds. They were bulky, purely utilitarian, and often difficult to manage.

We wanted to create coops designed specifically for the modern backyard. Something easy to care for, accessible even where farm supply stores do not exist, and beautiful enough to feel like a natural extension of the home. Quality, affordability, availability, and good design have always guided everything we build.

What does a typical day look like behind the scenes? Any fun or unexpected moments that come with running a chicken coop company?

Our team has grown a lot over the past few years, and we now have specialists handling many areas of the business. Personally, I love being involved in product innovation and development because it keeps me close to our customers.

We have over 10,000 customers, our Coop Crew, who are incredibly engaged and honest. They test products, share feedback, and tell us where things succeed or fall short. Often, what starts as a frustrating customer experience becomes an opportunity to improve a design. Those moments are challenging but incredibly rewarding.

Are there any exciting new designs, collaborations, or projects you are currently working on?

Absolutely. This industry is filled with passionate, collaborative people. We regularly work with small town manufacturers and accessory makers who genuinely love problem solving. There is a shared desire across the industry to grow backyard poultry in a thoughtful, accessible way, and we are excited about what is coming next.

What do you think makes your coops stand out from others on the market?

We like to think of ourselves as the Goldilocks option. On one end, there are very affordable coops that sacrifice quality. On the other, there are luxury coops that are beautifully made but often priced out of reach.

We sit right in the middle. Our coops balance quality, design, and cost in a way that feels just right for most families.

How have you seen the backyard chicken trend evolve in recent years?

When we started, backyard chickens were still considered unusual in many suburban neighborhoods. Since 2020, that has changed dramatically. Rising food costs, interest in sustainable living, and the growing appeal of homesteading have all contributed to this shift. We see this movement continuing to grow.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this glimpse into the world of our makers. At Babiekins, we love celebrating the artisans who bring warmth and charm into our readers’ homes. Our editor-in-chief, Priscila, has personally enjoyed using these same chicken coops twice—once at her Arkansas farmstead and now at her mid-century modern home in Southern California. It’s become a beloved part of daily life, and we hope it inspires you too.

Stay tuned for part two! If you’ve ever dreamed of starting your own little flock, our next feature—”Backyard Chicken 101″—will answer all your questions and help you get started.
