Modern farmhouse combines the simplicity of modern design with the rustic elements of country farm to create a unique style. I love using modern farmhouse elements in my interior designs. It’s a great way to achieve both clean lines and warmth all in one space. Here are some of my favorite picks for this design style favorite.
With all the extra entertaining I do in the summer, I like to make simple changes to brighten up my home to make it both fun and comfortable. Here are some easy summer updates you can make in your home in preparation for summer.
Bring the outdoors in simply by decorating with indoor plants. Plants are great as decor because they add height, color and life. Pick up some easy care plants like succulents or snake plants at your local nursery and place in pots in different places around your home.
Next time you are at your local farmer’s market grab a bunch of seasonal flowers. Peonies, carnations, or sunflowers will add some of that bright summer color to your home. I like to use a simple vase with fresh flowers all summer long as my dining table centerpiece.
Get inspired with the colors of summer by changing out your pillows. Put away your spring pastels and go for more color pop like these pillows from Home Thread. This summer, I love these beautiful blue tones inspired by the ocean. The fresh patterns and pop of color really bring the summer look to life.

One of the goals of every mom bringing home a new baby is quality sleep. But good sleeping habits don’t come easy for all babies. Swaddling can help for the first couple of months but eventually the baby is able to free his/her arms from the swaddle blanket. This can lead to constant waking in the middle of the night or during naptime. The Sleepy Hugs sleep suit is a great option for the baby ready to transition from the full swaddle. This suit was designed to allow your baby the freedom to move the arms but still gives the security they love. The result is better sleep for baby and mom.

I am constantly trying to get organized in my home. One of my trouble areas is the growing pile of my kids’ artwork. I don’t have enough room to keep it all but I don’t want to throw it away. Plum Print has solved my problem by taking my kids’ art, professionally photographing each piece, and then printing it in a beautifully bound book. No more piles of projects. Now, each one of their creations is organized in their very own hardcover book and stored neatly on our bookshelf. Such as easy solution to my problem and my kids are so proud of their new books.

Shared spaces can be fun to design but also challenging and this office/playroom was no exception. Designer Holly (@goldieandfawn) wanted to combine her design office and playroom into one shared space where her three kids could play while she worked from home.
When designing a combined space, keep these things in mind:
- Select space saving furniture pieces that have multiple functions. On the office side of the room, Holly can work with her laptop on the compact IKEA LISABO desk while seated comfortably on the LANGFJALL swivel chair. This desk/chair combination can also double as a homework station for her 9 year old daughter.
- Use simple storage units that hide clutter. On the playroom side of the room, the KALLAX shelving unit holds baskets to keep toys organized and clean up quick. For even more storage, the white IKEA PS cabinets add room for the kid’s toys and treasures. These cabinets are low enough for even the littlest hands to use.
- Keep the colors neutral. In a shared space, keeping the palette neutral will help keep the space feeling light and bright. Too many colors can make a small space feel even smaller.
- Add interest with an accent wall. This black and white “New Moon” wallpaper from Chasing Paper went up on the wall behind the desk super easy and became the most beautiful neutral accent wall.
- Use floor space. In a small combined space, every inch counts. It’s no secret that kids love to lay on the floor. To add comfort, the Ryland Wool Rug from Serena & Lily was an easy choice. It’s soft texture and durability is just what this room needed for when the kids are laying around with a good book.
Here’s a video with a special look inside the space.

I recently finished up this modern teen bedroom makeover for my client’s daughter who is 14. I sat down with her and talked about her vision for the room which included fresh paint, new bedding, a place to hang her pictures and a gallery wall collage. I spent some time with her going back and forth on inspiration boards until she decided on a palette of greys, pinks, and a pop of mint.
My client and I decided that it would be best for everyone if I competed the whole makeover while the family was out of town. The best part was that my client’s daughter was surprised with a brand new room when she returned home from vacation. What do you think of this modern teen bedroom makeover?

Winter is in full swing around the country but today in San Diego it was anything but cold. The kids and I took advantage of the 75 degree temperature and went for a stroll around our local market. The sun and the fresh air is just what I needed after being stuck inside for days with this year’s winter cold.
Since my kids are well out of the toddler stage, I have happily gotten rid of all of my strollers. But my 5 year old daughter Gwen still has her baby dolls that go everywhere with us. She brings a stroller everywhere we go for her “babies.” They are part of our family, so why shouldn’t they ride in style? She loves this lemon green doll stroller from Triokid. It’s the perfect size for her and it’s so stylish. The handle is adjustable so the stroller will grow with her. I love how it’s lightweight and can fold-up so it can really go anywhere with us. Right now Triokid is offering a 15% discount off their green stroller just for Babiekins readers. Go to Amazon.com and use the code: SS2017TK. Wouldn’t this stroller make a great Valentine’s Day gift for your little one?
