Healthykins // Family Friendly Crostini Appetizer

“Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes, and cooking.
It’s about harnessing imagination, empowerment, and creativity.”
Guy Fieri

We all love a freshly baked crisp French baguette, but when the slices resemble tiny clouds floating in the clear blue sky that makes everything taste a little better. To make this traditional crostini appetizer family friendly we added a bit of color and a bit of taste.

To get started, slice your baguette and lightly toast the pieces either with a toaster or under a broiler. I like to spread mine out on a cookie sheet, brush with olive oil and bake under the broiler for a few minutes. When your bread is toasted and cooled down the fun can begin! Grad your kiddos and grab your ingredients. We’ve found that almost anything tastes great on toast so feel free to get creative and mix and match your toppings.

Some kid approved combinations in our house include:
/ Unsalted butter or ghee, thinly sliced radishes, himalayan salt, parsley
/ Extra Virgin Olive Oil, sliced turkey, cucumbers, a drizzle of aged balsamic
/ Pesto, turkey, marinated yellow peppers, parsley or basil
/ Apricot jelly, Prosciutto, purple basil
/ Pesto, olive oil, grape tomatoes, freshly grated parmesan

Happy cooking and bon appétit!

Every child's room should match the personality and style of the little babiekins who will be tucked away there each night. In this bedroom, as seen in print six, we turned to dreamy neutrals, hints of black and pops of pink to create a space fit for a sleeping beauty. We all know how easy it is to fall into the current trends, but how do you balance trends with a classic look and feel? We sought out to create a tailored bedroom fit for a toddler that could easily transition with her as she grew. The result? A dreamland of neutrals and soft tones, hints of European elegance, and a bold modern spirit.

What you need:
Construction
Tissue paper
Twine
Pen, cutter, glue, white out
Washi Tape, including the disc
Option for the disk if you cannot find it just use some construction paper
Goodies

What to do:
*Step 1*: To start have all your supplies ready.
*Step 2*: Cut out of your construction paper a rectangle 5 1/4″x 4″. Start to decorate it with your washi tapes. Add your disk at the center. If you do not have washi tape disk, no worries, cut a circle out of some construction paper and glue it. Then, make a fan-shape, cut and roll it to create a cone; you can glue it together now.
*Step 3*: turn your rectangle on the other side and glue your tissue paper, as it is show on the picture.
*Step 4:* Now you can roll your rectangle and glue it together. Glue your cone to your rectangle.
*Step 5*: add some surprises to your rocket pocket, and with your twine close it.
*Step 6*: Add a message or your dad name with the help of your white-out.

THAT IS IT!
Happy Father’s Day. Hope you enjoy the day.

Healthykins // Smoothie Time!

Babiekins Magazine | Healthykins Smoothie 1

We all love a good smoothie, but let’s admit it, sometimes we get carried away with adding too much fruit and juice and not enough other goodies. Our family has been making smoothies for years and we have finally created a few recipes that are a win-win when it comes to balancing taste and healthy ingredients. Today, I’m sharing my personal favorite. I originally created this combination of ingredients for my son, who was recently diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, but found that it’s a perfect fit for all of our palates.

Featurekins // Covet + Lou

By Liz Jacob, Copy Editor Leave a Comment

Tina Burgos, the chief curator and founder behind Covet + Lou, has been emerged in the world of fashion since she was a small girl. Her unique and classic style is a quick reflection of the pieces and labels that she carries in her online boutique that is based out of Boston. We had the chance to sit down and chat with her about the history of Covet + Lou, her personal style and the trends for SS15. Make sure to pop on over to her store to see the well-curated gallery of womenswear, children’s attire, home goods and more.

Covet + Lou

What sparked your interest to become involved in fashion and open your Boston-based online boutique?
I’ve always been interested in fashion. My mom (after whom I named the shop) has an unbelievable sense of style, and that has really resonated with me throughout my life. She never follows trends; just concentrates on what she likes.

My first job out of college was in the fashion industry, and it really just stuck with me. Ultimately, I (along with my husband and our good friend) opened a small boutique in the heart of Boston. We featured burgeoning talent and independent designers. After nearly a decade in business, we decided to close the shop. My twins were infants at the time and my work/life balance was off kilter. It was important to me to focus on the girls.

Two years later, Covet + Lou came to be. With the website, I am continuing my original vision of highlighting up-and-comers and curating brands that are not readily available in the market. Additionally, I have rounded out the ready-to-wear with home goods and childrens apparel and accessories. I also stock a selection of vintage items, which I find at thrift stores and flea markets all over the country.

What are some of the important factors to keep in mind when piecing together your inventory for a new season?
It is important for me to constantly keep in mind that Covet + Lou is not meant to be everything for everyone. I carefully curate every single piece on the site, so each item reflect’s the Covet + Lou aesthetic. I scout out designers who have a distinctive point of view so the selection doesn’t feel commonplace. And I try to be sensitive to price, offering an entry point to the high end market.

What inspires you?
Honestly, I find inspiration in so many different places: the subway cars of New York, under-the-radar menswear blogs, interior design magazines just to name a few. My eyes are always open to how people execute their vision when it comes to design. And to me, the more effortless looking the better.

How would you describe your personal style?
I am a tomboy at heart. This is something I have known about myself since I was in grade school, and I have stayed true to it three decades later. I don’t like fussy and uncomfortable clothing. But uncomplicated does not necessarily mean boring. I like to incorporate several genres into my wardrobe: Japanese menswear, British street, and American Heritage seem to dominate my wardrobe selections.

How would you describe the Covet + Lou customer?
My clients are amazing! In a relatively short amount of time, I’ve been able to cultivate a very supportive community. My clients are also very savvy. They know what they like and what design elements compliment their lifestyles. What’s most exciting is that my clients are independent thinkers. They don’t follow cookie cutter trends, but rather are unique in their style choices.

What are your favorite trends for SS15?
The strongest trend is the mash-up of prints and patterns. This really should be categorized as a style element because this technique has stood the test of time. And you can be as subtle or bold when mixing textiles so anyone can incorporate this into their apparel and home decor. I also like the continued use of denim in innovative ways. It’s not just about the jeans any more; menswear shirting, lightweight jackets, deconstructed dresses are all something to look forward to this spring. And we’ll see this continue into fall with indigo and denim colored fabrics.

Any future plans for the company?
I am taking this journey one day at a time. It’s important for me to maintain a quality of life to spend time with my family, so the beauty of running this business from home is that I have the flexibility to give the twins my attention. If and when my time is compromised, I’ll have to make adjustments to maintain the work/life balance. I also think it’s crucial to expand the company in an intelligent way. As I am primarily responsible for every aspect of the organization, I need to scale in a manner that makes sense for healthy, sustainable growth.

What’s one piece of fashion advice you can share with our readers?
Trust your instincts! If you feel good and confident about your style, it will definitely show.

Copyright © 2023 · Babiekins Magazine | A Trendsetting Kids' Fashion Magazine and Online Community for Parents and Children Alike · Since the Southern California birth of Babiekins in 2010, the magazine has grown from into an internationally-recognized print publication with a global circulation and now a thriving online community. We are more than a kids’ fashion magazine. We search everywhere for inspiration, and go beyond trends to bring you fashion, style, decor, design, books, DIY, parties, and playthings. Our readers look to us to keep up with the best and most up-to-date concepts in the children’s market worldwide. We have an eye for quirk. We’re high-fashion, but we value whimsy over tradition. Playful childhood is more important to us than making kids into copycat adults. We believe life is beautiful, life is valuable, and life changes when you see it through the eyes of a child. We seek to transcend skin color, language and zip codes and bring out the real, wild, magical creativity inherent in every child. And behind Babiekins is an optimistic team of mothers-turned-editors, working from home, often with our own little babiekins climbing on, under and around the desks. We want to encourage you, and challenge you to see something different — something special — in yourself and in this world we all share. Welcome to Babiekins!
