Editor's Picks // Summer Outfit Ideas for Girls from Mabo Kids

[Disclosure of Material Connection: Babiekins Magazine received complimentary clothing from Mabo in exchange for this post. Babiekins personally hand-selected each of the editor’s pick products featured here, and was not required to write a positive review or feature specific items.]

Do you have a hard time finding stylish clothes for girls? I’m always on the search for outfits which aren’t too grown-up — but aren’t too frumpy and outdated, either. Even though this girl of mine has several years before she’s a teenager, she’s outgrown the sweet little outfits in the preschool section (::sob::). Already at just size 6/7/8, I’m finding that so many of the outfits in her size are have odd sayings emblazoned across the front — slogans I’m just not crazy about a second-grader wearing!

And I’m a firm believer children’s’ fashion is more than making kids into tiny adults — it’s all about real, wild, childhood.

Real childhood is full of sunshine-drenched, messy-haired, carefree magic. (Oh, to be little again.)

Think back to the most idyllic memory of your childhood — maybe catching tadpoles, creating a blanket fort while the thunder crashed down outside, or swinging your legs from a tree branch while lost in a Nancy Drew novel. Mabo really nails those memories with their summer lineup. These throw-back styles are

  • 100% cotton,
  • made in the USA,
  • span a classic color palette,
  • are well-made, and
  • tailored so beautifully!

Did you catch my unboxing video on Instagram stories? If you click over to the Editor’s highlight and tap through the stories there, you’ll find the whole series of unboxing videos, about eight stories in. In the videos, I show you each one of these fab garments and talk about why they made the cut for my Editor’s Picks series this summer (spoiler alert — it’s the 1940s-inspired flair and the super-soft fabric!)

My daughter and I were hanging out a coffee shop here in the Nashville suburbs earlier this week, and got so many comments about her outfit — lots of women said they wished it came in their size. (Are you in Utah? You can actually browse through Mabo women’s clothing in person at the Mabo flagship store in Salt Lake City! How cool is that? They have a selection of women’s styles online, too, for those of us who can’t make the trek to SLC.)

If you, like me, want to dress your girl in classic, age-appropriate styles — and you don’t want licensed characters, Barbie pink, or questionable tween styles — then hop over to Mabo and browse their boys, girls, and unisex summer clothing.

My top picks from Mabo this season:

01. // Fringed Saddle Shoes in Burgundy and Camel (real leather!)

02. // Puff-Sleeve Pointelle Sweater in Pistachio

03. // Remy Sailor Pants in Storm Linen and Cotton

04. // Organic Cotton Tank Top in Graphite

05. // James Track Shorts in Moss with Grey Binding

06. // Organic Cotton Striped Nautical Tee in Natural and Scarlet

Here’s to creating a wild summer your kids will remember for the rest of their lives!

P.S. Her bookworm necklace was a gift from Gunner & Lux, and the sunnies were a gift from Zoobug. She’s wearing a discontinued style — but you can get similar Zoobug sunglasses here. Happy summer!

Get Featured on Babiekins: Real kids, real trends!

By Gina Munsey, Senior Editor Leave a Comment

Real kids, real trends. Submit your kids' outfit of the day photos to Babiekins Magazine

Real kids, real trends

Babiekins is all about real, wild, childhood and authentic living. We’re high-fashion, but we value whimsy over tradition. Playful childhood is more important to us than making kids into copycat adults. (Say it louder for the people in the back!)

If you’re a long-time reader, you remember a fun weekly series called LIL’ STYLEKINS, when we used to feature real style from real kids. Well, hold your horses because WE ARE BRINGING LIL’ STYLEKINS BACK! Each week, we’ll put the spotlight on one of our adorable readers, and show you how one little trendsetter has styled a week’s worth of outfits from his or her closet. And for this series, real childhood reigns. No headshots, no professional photoshoots, no makeup, no editorials.

Real kids, real trends, real fun.

How to get featured on Babiekins

Want to share your little’s looks with Babiekins blog readers? Here’s how! Email the following information to gina@babiekinsmag.com

  • Your child’s FIRST NAME and AGE
  • Your LOCATION (city, state, country)
  • PHOTOS of your child in 5-7 different outfits

Here are a few more important things to know to increase your likelihood of being chosen.

Photos you submit…

  • …should be aesthetically pleasing and inspiring, but should not be professional model photos
  • …should show the entire outfit, not just the child’s face
  • …should be taken at the child’s level, rather than top-down, looking down at the child.
  • ..should have a bright, fun, but uncluttered background
  • …should not include makeup
  • …should not be retouched or excessively edited or filtered
  • …should incorporate authentic expressions (no duck face!)
  • …should not be square.
  • …should not have appeared on or in any other children’s fashion magazine or blog
  • …should not contain words, text, or doodles.
  • …should consist of one single picture, i.e., no collages
  • …should be at least 700 pixels wide.
  • …should not be extremely large files — our servers start to complain and spit the files back out! : (

Have multiple kiddos? You can either combine them into a single LIL’ STYLEKINS submission, or you can give them each their own spotlight — your choice.

Let’s celebrate real, wild, authentic childhood!

#BabiekinsTakesAStand // A Statement to Protect Childhood Innocence

#BabiekinsTakesAStand // A Statement to Protect Childhood Innocence

To our great dismay, lately we have encountered more and more images portraying young kids made up, dressed, and posed like little adults — and fewer and fewer images capturing the pure, innocent, wild magic of childhood. But childhood is what Babiekins has always been about. We’ve always been different than the other magazines. Like we say in our mission statement, “Playful childhood is more important to us than making kids into copycat adults”. And today, we just want to pause for a moment and remind you again of our commitment to preserve and protect children. We want to stop and remind you of our stand against against the suggestive, provocative, and over-sexualized images which have become all-too-common in the children’s fashion industry — and encourage and empower you to stand up for innocence as well. And we want to assure you that we as an editorial team are committed to being more selective than ever about the kind of images we choose to be associated with. After all, fashion and art should never, ever, take priority over childhood innocence.

We invite you to share this statement, and join us in the #‪‎BabiekinsTakesAStand‬ movement.

Delicate, luxurious, and earthy yet ethereal, the color palette throughout Flora and Henri’s Spring/Summer 2016 children’s collection reminds us of all the calm and idyllic moments throughout childhood. Gentle blush tones usher in the colors of daybreak (everyone with small children knows the colors of the sunrise!) while classic navy, pale stripes and grounded metallics bring the vintage era into modernity.

We especially love the most unique shade of patent salmon orange on the Frances shoes — the hue elevates the traditional Mary Jane, and adds a welcomed spunky twist to a classic. This sense of timelessness is extended throughout Flora and Henri’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection, with little details like offset buttons, fine-gauge knits, t-strap shoes, and tiny calico prints creating a wardrobe equally fit for a classic storybook as for a modern playdate.

Girl Scientist Editor’s Picks

LUVKINS :: Editor's Picks :: Top Gift Choices for a Little Scientist :: Girl Scientist from Babiekins Magazine

Yesterday over lunch, my extremely analytical kindergartner was pondering the mysteries of the human body while reading an anatomy book. She lingered over the detailed skin and hair chapter for a while, and then commented, “So, that’s a disappointment. The long hair in movies.” (Accurate.)

But the princess game is strong in our society, isn’t it? There’s nothing wrong with dressing up or fairy tales, of course, but as a parent, I can’t help try to counter the entitlement message that so often goes along with princess culture. So I really love fun gift ideas which encourage my daughter to explore, discover, and actively observe the world around her.

What do you have tucked away to surprise your little babiekins with this Christmas? Here are a few of my recommendations!

01. Hardcover Rosie Revere, Engineer book via Seed Factory Atlanta  |  02. Waterproof Bluetooth Swimmer, Jr Speaker via Polk Boom | 03. Perito Moreno Photoreal Dress via Tea Collection | 04. Yucca Blue / Shell White Fitzsimmons Kids Boots via Native Shoes | 05. Paperback How to be an Explorer of the World book via Barnes & Noble | 06. Brain Cell / Neuron Plush via Giant Microbes | 07. Yay! Pencils via Caroline Creates on Etsy | 08. Nancy B’s Science Club Microscope & Activity Journal via Amazon

[Aveline is wearing kids’ accessory glasses from Target, hat from H&M and faux-fur puffer jacket from Ruum.]

Schoolkins // Making Nature Fossils in the City

Schoolkins // Making Nature Fossils in the City | An Urban Nature Project by Gina Munsey as published on Babiekins Magazine blog

If you’ve been anywhere — anywhere! — in the last several years, you know nature exploration is a thing. Nature walks and nature journaling have exploded in popularity, and at every corner you can find watercolor studies of leaves, plants, and insects. But this fascination is nothing new. People once crowed by the hundreds into drafty lecture halls, to listen in awe while explorers of old captivated them with tales of just-discovered wonders. Curiosity cabinets, those aptly named display cases of time gone by, were filled with insect specimens, unusual rocks, pressed botany, and yes, even preserved taxidermy. We as humans have always been enraptured by the unknown, the adventure that’s just beyond the horizon.

Today, especially in #schoolkins circles, there’s such an emphasis put on letting your children out into the wild open, and letting them splash through creeks, dig for worms, and forge their own trail through the underbrush. But if you live in an urban setting or an apartment building, like we do, this kind of exploration likely isn’t a natural extension of your day. There are occasional bursts of nature in the city, yes, but the open prairies come alive by reading Sarah, Plain and Tall rather than stepping outside our front door, and the only tree-houses we’re likely to encounter are those in Swiss Family Robinson.

And I know we’re definitely not the only family making our home in a multi-family building, rather than a mountainside cabin. That’s why I am happy to share this little fossil clay project with you today. It’s a nature project, but everything you need can be gleaned from your windowsill plants or collected from the sidewalks that wind their way through your not-so-wild landscape. We just miiight have foraged a little bit of faux-nature — stay with me here! — from the toy box, too.

Fossil Clay

To create your own fossils, you’ll first need to mix up some sedimentary rock. You can find fossil clay recipes in a number of places around the internet as well as in several books, but here’s how we did it. Make either a single or double batch, depending on how many fossils you wish to create. (Be sure to measure carefully, or your clay won’t be usable.)

1 c. baking soda // or 2. c. baking soda
1/2 c. corn starch // or 1 c. corn starch
1/2 c. cold water // or 1 c. cold water

Whisk together dry ingredients and water, and pour in to a saucepan. With a sturdy spoon, stir mixture over medium heat for just under 4 minutes, until it thickens into a consistency that’s a little less stiff than playdough. Pour the lump of clay onto a glass plate, and let cool for a couple of minutes, then knead until smooth.

Roll the dough into little spheres, then flatten into discs. Place the discs onto a non-stick surface, like a cutting board covered in wax paper or a Teflon-coated baking sheet. Your sedimentary rock is now ready to take the shape of the items you press into it!  Before we made our fossil clay, we snipped rosemary clippings from our urban container “garden”, gathered leaves from houseplants, collected twigs and gravel from the sidewalks and the area around the downspouts, and even dove into the toy storage for some little creatures.

After you’ve imprinted all sorts of creative patterns — there are so many different options! — allow your sedimentary rock to dry. In a dry climate, leaving the fossils out uncovered overnight might be sufficient;  you live in a humid climate, like we do, it make take a little longer for the discs to fully dry out. (You might also need to gently place the discs on a wire rack once the tops have dried, so the underneath can dry as well.)

Your littles now have a whole treasure trove of fossils, each one as unique and individual as their imaginations — and each one is as wild and wonderful as the place you call home, whether that’s in a secluded village or many stories into the city sky.

If you live in an urban area, what have you done lately to encourage exploration?

FEATUREKINS // Grass Stains Boutique

In many places, this weekend marks the start of summer vacation, and no more school until fall. I remember that exhilarating “School’s out!” glee like it was yesterday, don’t you? For my friends and I, summer break was always full of so much exploration and imagination. Our bicycles became our chariots, and we spent the days alongside creek beds, in the shade of old orchards, making paths through the endless grasses of the prairie, and picnicking on the mossy carpet of a forest floor. All these places were transformed, and became our castles, our fortresses, our uncharted territory. The world was ours, and it was magical.

These perfectly summery images from one of our summer issue (print no. 6!) advertisers, Grass Stains Boutique, bring back so many memories of those carefree days — how we gathered sticks and twigs and gleaned bits of string and leather and wood from the workshop, and used these found objects to assemble little forts and fancy accessories and build an entire kingdom and become whoever in the world we wanted to be before the late, long shadows of midsummer sunset called us back inside.
