Minimal Nursery Corner in a Master Bedroom

By Gina Munsey, Senior Editor Leave a Comment

PIN FOR Minimal Nursery Corner in Master Bedroom

[A disclosure of material connection, and a note about partnerships: this post is sponsored. Babiekins received a crib from Babyletto and a rug from Ruggable in exchange for writing and publishing this post. The cuddle bear from Fabelab, merino blanket from Pure Simple Chic, wool pillow from Moon Water Co, and crib linens from Peapod and Nate were provided to Babiekins as part of a separate promotion. The Jesus Heals book is courtesy the launch team coordinators at Harvest House.  Babiekins was not required to write a positive review; all opinions are our own.]

When you live in a small space, each room needs to serve more than one function. My daughter’s bedroom doubles as a homeschool room, and our dining room doubles as a home office. And now the master doubles as a nursery, too.

#Thenewestbabiekins surprised us all by arriving early — welcome, Lochlan Ambrose! — so we didn’t even have a nursery space ready for him yet. Yikes! And after his NICU stay, he moved home to a small bassinet. But this month, things finally stabilized enough around here to create a little haven for him in the corner of the master bedroom.

Minimal Nursery Corner in Master Bedrrom

Minimal Nursery Corner in Master Bedrrom

Since the master bed linen is already white, setting the light and airy palette was easy. I started by layering a large Whitecaps Indigo Rug from Ruggable (it’s washable!) over the existing wall-to-wall carpeting, then paired it with a modern whale-print crib sheet from Peapod and Nate. The whole space is anchored by Babyletto’s 4-in-1 Gelato Convertible Crib in White/Washed Natural. (Bonus: it will convert to a toddler bed later!)

I love how the earthen textures of the Oaxaca-made pillows from Moon Water Co (moved to the master bed when baby is using the crib) counteract the breezy lightness of the other nautical textiles. And of course, no room in my house is complete without books! Favorites from author S.D. Smith and Catechesis Books are close by on my Tolix-inspired nightstand. (The lamp is from Memoky a few years back. Here’s a similar one.) The guitar is in our personal collection, and the Dylan poster is merch from a concert we attended several years ago. The woven rainbow, a promise of hope, was a gift from my friend Spot of Sunshine — she found it on Etsy!

This space is calming, and it has quickly become a favorite spot in our home. It’s clean, bright, and minimal, and the soft golden tones really warm up what might otherwise by a stark look. And best of all — Lochlan is happy here!

By Gina Munsey, Senior Editor Leave a Comment

baby shower gift ideas for mom

Looking for baby shower gift ideas which focus on pampering the glowing mama-to-be? We’ve rounded up a handful of our favorite luxe and glam — but still practical! — gifts for the modern mom.

[A disclosure of material connection, and a note about partnerships: Babiekins received compensation and complimentary products from Francis & Henry, Basq NYC, and Sleepy Panda in exchange for press. We were not required to write a positive review; all opinions are our own.]

Francis & Henry

This Poland-based luxury brand focuses the spotlight on mamas first, and babies second. Each thoughtful gift bundle (the Mini is pictured) includes a phenomenally soft V-neck lounging / nursing dress for mama, and the brand also offers a lovely selection of patterned bralettes and unders, too.

Basq NYC

Before baby makes her grand appearance (and after, too!) pamper mama with Basq NYC’s selection of pregnancy skincare. The Big News! Expecting Mama’s Mini Kit (pictured) includes an aromatic citrus sugar scrub, stretch mark butter, and a trio of skin oils in eucalyptus, lavender, and citrus.

Sleepy Panda

A modern mama needs a modern bag, and Sleepy Panda’s coated-canvas Kaitlyn Backpack (pictured) is just the thing. The back has an easy-open zippered flap, letting you quickly retrieve items stashed at the bottom of the bag. There’s also a phone compartment and built-in USB hub ,which connects to an optional charging station battery pack (sold separately.)

Crossway

School Girl Style: Fall Trends Shopping Guide

By Gina Munsey, Senior Editor Leave a Comment

If you’re like me, you keep dabbling in back-to-school clothes and accessory shopping even after the supply lists are purchased and the first day celebrations are over. It’s never the wrong time of year for a new outfit — or a new pencil case! Pencils and fall just go together.

[First, a disclosure of material connection, and a note about partnerships. Babiekins reached out to a select list of favorite brands in preparation for this feature, and received compensation and complimentary product in exchange for press. We researched and chose these brands based on trend awareness, style, availability, and uniqueness in the marketplace, before coordinating a feature with the brands. We were not required to feature specific products or brands, and were not required to write positive reviews. All opinions are our own.]

To quote You’ve Got Mail, “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” (I’m particularly enamored with these delightful pencil cases from Fabelab.)

1. (& 7.) Asteraki, Switzerland

Subscription boxes are nothing new, but the new fashion box brand Asteraki delights us. You name your budget, style preferences, and size, and the style experts at Asteraki will hand-pack you a box full of fabulously eco-friendly styles. Does it work? Without even seeing the other items I was rounding up for color-themed feature inspired by Instagram’s turquoise and coral trend, Asteraki owner chose a coral puma leggings and dress, seen in numbers one and seven of the round-up above. I’d say they nailed it! asteraki.ch, @asteraki.ch on Instagram.

2. Tivoli Clothing, Slovenia

Tivoli Clothing packs a nostalgic punch for me, since I spent my early schoolgirl days in Ljubljana, the capital city of the country which is now known as Slovenia. Named after Ljubljana’s Tivoli Park and gardens, this boutique brand offers marvelous jumpsuits, pinafores, dresses, trousers and tops, in colorful linen and organic cotton. Details like natural-fiber lace and wooden buttons set Tivoli’s garments apart from the crowd. We tested out the Mara romper at a Frida Kahlo exhibition earlier this autumn: so very on trend! tivoliclothing.com, @tivoli_clothing on Instagram.

3. Peridot Kids, Canada

Did you catch Peridot Kids in our huge Top 50 Baby Brands feature? Known for their small-batch / slow-fashion approach, Peridot Kids is launching styles for primary school kids this fall. We’re super excited about this, since we’re already huge fans of their modern organic looks for younger kids. Want a sneak peek? Look no further than the ruffle tulle skirt you see in number three above! peridotkids.com, @peridotkids on Instagram.

4. Lil Bellies, United States

You can’t go anywhere on Instagram without seeing coral and turquoise, so it’s no surprise I’m naming these two colors as the top trends for school girl style. But there’s another swoon-worthy genre in Instaland right now too, the nature-themed flat-lay, and our next retailer @lilbellies’ Instagram feed is a prime example. Shopping Lil Bellies — with categories like Homestead, Library, and Explorers — will have you snapping your own cinematic nature images in no time. lilbellies.com, @lilbellies on Instagram.

5. Fabelab, Denmark

Danish brand Fabelab is a tastemaker; there’s no doubt about that. From toys to bedding to furniture to party decor and beyond, Fabelab curates a truly perfect symphony of brands, textures, and colors. We’re smitten with the Fabelab Schoolkid collection — gym bags, smocks, pencil cases, oh my! We want one of everything, in each colorway. fabelab.com, @fabelabdk on Instagram.

6. Dotti, United States

As classic as an (organic) apple for the teacher, this Manhattan brand’s dresses are inspired by a vintage photograph of grandma Dotti.  With timeless fabric patterns like calico floral, windowpane check, and tiny polka-dots, Dotti reimagines timeless styles for the current millennium. And we think these pure, fresh, flawless vibes are the perfect celebration of childhood,  especially for school picture day! dottishop.com, @dotti.shop on Instagram.

What about you — where’s your favorite place to splurge? What fall season school goodies have you picked up lately?

With an eye toward current colorways (you’ll see a lot of ochre, indigo, and gray), tasteful neutrals, and an overall unisex vibe, this ultimate designer baby guide is the it-list of what’s hottest in the kids’ style world.

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo’s New Veterinary Center

By Gina Munsey, Senior Editor Leave a Comment

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary Center

What’s there to do in Nashville with kids? Plenty!

[Disclosure of material connection: the kind folks over at the Nashville Zoo provided us with complimentary passes.]

Our whole family loves the Nashville Zoo. On a hot summer day, it’s a welcome diversion from the hustle and bustle of downtown, taking you instead through balmy oases with stunning botanicals, winding paths, and — oh yes — gorgeous animal habitats.

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary Center

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary Center

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary Center

During our most recent excursion, we toured the Nashville Zoo’s incredible new HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center. And wow. Seriously impressive.

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary CenterFor starters, it’s huge! The center boasts modern architecture which compliments the rustic and wild natural surroundings, and spans over 20,000 square feet. Examination rooms, incubators and nursery space, an intensive-care unit, radiology facilities, and an in-house laboratory are all staffed by a team of highly-qualified staff and technicians.

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary Center

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary CenterNashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary CenterPlus, there’s a full veterinary operating theater. And since one wall is glass, surgeries are viewable from the Veterinary Center’s impressive outdoor (but covered and climate-friendly) observation deck. Even if the operating theater is not active when you’re there, you can pause and watch an educational films recounting the Zoo’s ongoing conservation animal care endeavors. Did you know some animals at the Nashville Zoo even get acupuncture?

You can follow the @NashZooVet Twitter account to find out which animals are currently viewable at the center, and see the daily treatment schedule so you can catch feedings, exams, operations, animal acupuncture, and so much more.

If you’re local to the area, this is a particularly good reason to get a season pass — there is so much to observe each day at the Veterinary Center!

And I love this — since the Nashville Zoo is an integral part of the Clouded Leopard Species Survival Program, you just might catch a glimpse of some absolutely adorable leopard cubs through the observation windows.

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary Center

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary CenterNashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary CenterThe head veterinary doctor at the zoo is one of the nation’s premier experts on clouded leopards, and lends her specialized expertise to the successful collaborative breeding program — right here in Nashville. During our visit, there were about half a dozen bundles of fluff tumbling around in the nurseries. And you can often watch bottle-feeding up close, like we did, from the observation deck windows.

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary Center

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary CenterNashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary CenterWhat a magical experience!

Going inside the HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center at the Nashville Zoo isn’t a regular part of zoo admission, but super-exciting behind-the-scenes guided tours are available as part of the backstage zoo pass options. (The Nashville Zoo kindly extended a complimentary tour for us, so the scope of your backstage pass might differ a little.)

My little science-lover was in seventh heaven in the lab, which allows technicians to complete time-sensitive diagnoses in-house, rather than outsourcing.

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary Center

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary Center

The day we visited, the Veterinary Center had clouded leopards, Amazon tree frogs, and just-hatched lorikeets in the viewing area — they’ve since added binturongs (AKA bear cats), too.  Of course, the animals vary depending on when you go, but the @NashZooVet Twitter feed lets you know what animals you can expect to see from the observation deck each day, so be sure to check it before heading over to the zoo.

Remember, viewing from the observation deck is always free, and included in zoo admission!

Nashville with Kids: Nashville Zoo's New Veterinary Center

We already loved the Nashville Zoo — where else can you walk with kangaroos, ride a zip line, explore a historic mansion and gardens AND see amazing animals? —  but the launch of the HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center has given us so many more reasons to head back again…and again and again. There are 365 different species represented at the Nashville Zoo, so you really won’t run out of awe-inspiring encounters anytime soon.

Plan your visit to the Nashville Zoo!

How to Have a Longer Summer

By Gina Munsey, Senior Editor Leave a Comment

Celebrating the Glittering Golden Days of Summer, by Land and by Sea (Star)

[Disclosure of Material Connection: Babiekins Magazine received complimentary shoes from Sea Star Beachwear in exchange for this post. Babiekins was not required to write a positive review or feature specific items.]

These happy golden days of late summer are my favorite. The sun this time of year softens to peach and gold, and the shadows dance for extra hours across the warmed earth. Tomato vines are dotted in crimson, rosemary and lavender and sage burst into blossom, and everything’s tinged with the scent of cedar breezes.

As most turn their eyes, now, to school schedules and supply lists, these trailing summer hours are in great danger of being overlooked, hurried through, and trampled upon. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can still carve out time for stillness. We can schedule time for being.

Do you know what is a constant, never tangled up in the tyranny of the urgent, and always — always — there?

The outdoors.

As the flurry of summer vacation and hectic family trips dwindle down, nature is in no hurry. The water is there, steady, as ancient as the dawn of time, lapping at the shore. You can glimpse her through in the towering trees, still, shimmering in the glistening dusk.

Celebrating the Glittering Golden Days of Summer, by Land and by Sea (Star)

While everyone else is off scrambling into the new routine — while our activity-crazed culture prematurely declares summer over —  the outdoors still invites us to linger and spend our weekends en plein air.

We can still gather.

https://www.seastarbeachwear.comCelebrating the Glittering Golden Days of Summer, by Land and by Sea (Star)Celebrating the Glittering Golden Days of Summer, by Land and by Sea (Star)

We can still wade, and splash, and share laughter.

We can still be.

There is no seasonal limitation for togetherness.

Celebrating the Glittering Golden Days of Summer, by Land and by Sea (Star)

I like it best when summer can trickle into fall, and we can all enjoy a glorious mingling of sun and shadows, heat and breezes, blossoms and leaves. Contrary to what the advertising hype tries to tell you — and sell you — summer doesn’t drop off into the abyss the moment school starts. There’s still time for Sunday afternoons on the coast, and Saturday afternoons at the pool.

Celebrating the Glittering Golden Days of Summer, by Land and by Sea (Star)

Celebrating the Glittering Golden Days of Summer, by Land and by Sea (Star)

Celebrating the Glittering Golden Days of Summer, by Land and by Sea (Star)

And I don’t want to waste these fleeting golden days with fussy, single-function, wardrobe items. I want clothes and shoes that can bridge seasons and environments, jumping seamlessly from the lake on Sunday to school on Monday (or from Chinese school on Saturday morning to a poolside deck chair on Saturday afternoon, in our case.)

These neoprene espadrilles from Sea Star look like classic Spanish espadrilles, but function like non-skid boat shoes — if such shoes were made out of wetsuits. Honestly, why did it take someone so long to think of this? You can skip right down into the water, and your espadrilles won’t disintegrate. (That toe kick? It’s not made of rope fiber. The sole is rubber. These land-and-sea shoes are totally safe for water, yet totally chic for land life, too.)

Celebrating the Glittering Golden Days of Summer, by Land and by Sea (Star)

Because who has time to change? Who wants to squander even one moment of these precious hours?

Hold on tight, be still, and let the water splash all around.

Editor’s Picks // Mondan Kids at the Nashville Zoo

By Gina Munsey, Senior Editor Leave a Comment

Babiekins Magazine Editor's Picks from Mondan Kids | Summer Girl's Style at the Nashville ZooBabiekins Magazine Editor's Picks from Mondan Kids | Summer Girl's Style at the Nashville ZooBabiekins Magazine Editor's Picks from Mondan Kids | Summer Girl's Style at the Nashville ZooBabiekins Magazine Editor's Picks from Mondan Kids | Summer Girl's Style at the Nashville ZooBabiekins Magazine Editor's Picks from Mondan Kids | Summer Girl's Style at the Nashville Zoo

[Disclosure of Material Connection: Babiekins Magazine received complimentary clothing from Mondan in exchange for this post. Babiekins personally hand-selected each of the editor’s pick products featured here, and was not required to write a positive review or feature specific items. Babiekins also received complimentary zoo admission, courtesy of the Nashville Zoo.]

Summer fashion is a tricky thing, isn’t it? If the advertisements are to be believed, everyone spends summer cavorting on tropical isles, in a magical land of endless sun. But the truth is, summer also has its fair share of thunderstorms, chilly nights — and, sometimes — downright gloom. So it only makes sense that summer fashion should follow suit with styles for all summer weather situations, not just beach-level heat.

When we moved to Nashville, people warned us the summer weather would be as hot as Nashville’s famous hot chicken. But since we moved from the subtropics, we’re actually finding middle Tennessee’s weather to be a lot more varied than the predictable tropical heat we left behind. And varied weather means varied wardrobe choices. Plus, we now have an actual autumn to look forward to — even more clothing options.

When I browse the imported kids’ styles from Mondan (say: mon-DAHN), it makes me happy because they celebrate a wider view of summer than a narrow beach-only outlook. And that’s real life!

01. // Lego Dress

First of all, we have to talk about the Mondan dress my daughter wore to the Nashville Zoo last week! (You can see it in all the photos above.) The dress is inspired by the classic striped shirt you might find in the menswear section, but is peppered with bursts of embroidered, primary-color building bricks — you know, LEGO bricks! And I love the drop-waist ruffle. It’s the perfectly unexpected balance of preppy and quirky — and the lightweight cotton is the ideal keep-cool fabric for hot, humid days. (And perfect for petting kangaroos, too.)

But not all days push the temperature boundaries. So let’s tackle the rest of my editor’s picks — my top selections for the season from Mondan:

Babiekins Magazine Editor's Picks from Mondan Kids | Summer Girl's Style at the Nashville Zoo

02.// Yellow Plaid Shirt

Every summer wardrobe needs a flannel for spontaneous smores around the campfire, right? And this one is screamin’ yellow — no traditional red or monochromatic buffalo check here.

03. // Plaid Skirt

Look at this darling school-girl skirt! I like to break up the textural monotony of summer wardrobes and make sure every mid-year closet has unexpected bursts of texture — like this plaid skirt — to pair with lighter pieces.

04. // Red Suit Pants

Lastly, have you ever seen red suit pants like this? These incomparable trousers are a paper-bag style, with a high waist that cinches to create a ruffle. Pure magic! (See them on my daughter here, during a visit to the Adventure Science Center in Nashville.) Mondan carries girls’ suit pants in navy, and has matching blazers for each, too.

My favorite thing about the garments Mondan stocks? They function like basics (e.g., solid color bottoms) but every single one of them has a twist! Functional, practical, but at the same time there’s still a sense of elevated style. I love that. And I know you will too, based on how many strangers walk up to us and comment on these clothes every single time we go out!

Head over to Mondan and shop contemporary girl’s clothes. Don’t forget to follow @Mondankids on Instagram, too!

Our readers look to us to keep up with the best and most up-to-date concepts in the children’s market worldwide. We have an eye for quirk. We’re high-fashion, but we value whimsy over tradition.
