Storykins // The Awesome Book of Love

By Dixie, Former Contributor Leave a Comment

We are in love with The Awesome Book of Love, the third addition to Dallas Clayton’s “The Awesome Book” series.  His illustrations and words always give kids so much empowerment and confidence.  Dallas Clayton has a way of taking everyday challenges like “differences” , and “goodbyes” and celebrating it in a way kids understand with so much positive light.

“If I was a dinosaur, and you were a jet there’s a chance, a good chance that we’d never have met…you’re you and I’m me and we’re together as together can be…It’s about iving life with such strength and emotion and knowing that waves are just part of the ocean…I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU! In so many ways over thousands of year over million of days….”

You can also always count on Dallas Clayton’s instagram and Tumblr to make you smile.

Featurekins // Children of the Tribe

By Dixie, Former Contributor Leave a Comment

Byron Bay in Australia has been back on the map recently with all the beautiful boho fashion labels that have been emerging out of their little beach town.  Children of the Tribe is no exception and their fits for the “free-spirited little people” is sure to be on every mama’s list of  fits you just NEED your littles wearing.  What I love most about Children of the Tribe is that they are so true to themselves and their vision, and how every piece tells a story of travel or the wild.   Characterized by tribal and animal prints, floaty florals and soft but strong natural fabrics, this little tribe’s wanderlust is paying off..Children of the Tribe is going places!

Momkins // Mom’s the Word in Fashion

By Dixie, Former Contributor Leave a Comment

Well it seems like it’s the right time in fashion to be a mom these days! School drop offs have seriously never ever looked this good.  With the come back of “Boyfriend jeans” and Birkenstocks, I am loving waking up in the morning and being able to opt for a really laid back effortless look that is still on trend.  Go straight from soccer practice to martinis with these practical staples that you will find yourself resorting to over and over again this season.

Here in Hawaii, we spend most of our time (especially keikis) in Swimwear and I was so excited to hear that Acacia, a leading women’s swimwear label based out of Hawaii was starting a little girl’s line for their Summer 14 range to match their mamas!  I know you will all love it as much as I do and at the least have you dreaming of summer to come faster than ever.  Warning:  THIS MAY CONTAIN SOME REALLY baby-GIRL making material!

Travelkins :: Discoveries in Paris

By Dixie, Former Contributor Leave a Comment

mason rose photo (6 of 9)

There’s nothing quite like the feeling and sound of the wheels of your stroller hitting the cobblestone pavement in Paris.  I fell hard in love. Every morning, we would wake up, stroll down the bustling little town of Le Marais where we would go down and start with our morning ritual of croissant and coffee..Three is such a fun age to travel with.  They ask questions.  They take it in.  We get to explore together.

My son would beg me to take him to the park and I never refuse especially while traveling.  Parks are where you can people watch.  Playgrounds do not lie.  There is something really pure and honest about watching a mom and child at a playground that allows you to take a further glimpse into their culture and lifestyle.  That morning, I witnessed two little sisters trying to sing in harmony to their mom.  On another side of the playground were kids playing with old school tops.  Oh how fun are those things!  Where do I even get one back home?  I spy on a mother and son in matching New Balances.  She is so effortlessly cool.  Her Parisian understated elegance makes me want to become her best friend.

I quickly took note that New Balances are popular shoes in Paris and that children are almost always strolled around in Maclaren strollers.  Most of them don’t look perfect, they look worn and used.   I also took account that there wasn’t anyone holding a coffee on the go like most Americans do as our daily routine. An instant gratification of a starbucks cup in your hand sound familiar right? Sure, I did see the occasional to-go espressos, but they were a last minute option in which they were placed in clear cups with out tops or anything.  This was when I realized…this is it.  This is what makes people different here, is that they appreciate moments longer.  Coffee is meant to be drunk sitting down amidst a conversation or a read. Clothes are meant to be worn over years and years and not because they are trending but because they have never let you down and they become apart of you.   Entertainment is meant to be seen before your eyes and not on a computer screen and flowers are meant to be smelt on the way to your destination.

I asked myself, why do we fix or reinvent things if it’s not broken?  All those old carousels around the Eiffel Tower that go 2 miles per hour, they still bring children so much joy.  The slower it went  also meant that the longer I could spend spotting my son’s face as it came around and the fluttering in my heart would extend to a point where I couldn’t breath anymore.  No words could bare to come out.  Just my laugh, and a big stretched out smile electrified by gratitude…These are the moments we live for.  Life is just that much more richer in Paris when wealth is measured in memories.

Luvkins :: Babiekin Friendly Cafe

By Dixie, Former Contributor Leave a Comment

We LOVE our local cafe and supporting small businesses.  We also love eating Acai Bowls!  Packed with anti-oxidants, Acai Bowls once originated from Brazil, but has been holding down it’s name all over the globe now.   We may be biased, but our local cafe makes the best.  Not to mention the view is pretty hard to beat and it comes complete with a  toy/play area equipped with train sets to keep your littles busy while you work on your laptop or read a book.   We often head down to start our mornings here at the Island Brew Coffehouse or to end a beautiful day.

Craftykins // Food Art with Buggie and Jellybean

By Dixie, Former Contributor 3 Comments

Isn’t instagram amazing?  I love that we can support other moms that we have never even met halfway around the world and get inspired by their creativity one squared photo at a time.  I think all mom’s have this soft spot that resonates in us when we see something super awesome for kids whether it’s a playground, or a kiddie corner tucked away in a cafe or a bank, and worse if you’re on a romantic getaway that leaves you going “Aww honey we should’ve brought the kids!”  It’s a sense that assures us we love being parents and that we would not give it up for the world.  So you can understand why I couldn’t resist following this woman, @bugbeansmomma, on instagram after a photo she put up of an edible wave and surfboard popped up on my feed.  Her blog is an embodiment of how creative and fun motherhood can be!  Here she is to share with Babiekins, some of her favorite work along with some tips!

photo 3_1

“Cowabunga” – Kitchen scissors will be your best friend, I find it easier to cut the bread first then add the inside ingredients, like this surf board.

photo 3

“Frankenwhich”- Holidays make for an easy way to use and introduce fun plates

photo 4

Banana Sushi – Remember a fun plate does not need to be a cool design, but making it fun and re imagining it. Banana, almond butter, raw honey and whole wheat.

photo77

“Angry Birds”- Try to use items that you normally wouldn’t put on your kids plates.  Almonds and edamame  might not usually appear  on them but makes for a  perfect healthy addition.

photo-243

Mater – Try not to let “requests” stump you up.

photo-245
Kissie Fish – Buy exotic items for added fun, star fruit for instance make great star fish!

How did you get started?
A fellow Momma blogger/IGer/IRL friend Lindsay Hopkins of Pen and Paint started a fun hashtag on IG called #weplaywithourfood. I was intrigued right away.  I love the idea of taking food and making it fun. I will be honest in that I have never had an issue with picky eaters, yes there are a few things each will not eat but overall, they eat a good variety of food.  So for me it was a creative outlet, a way to introduce new foods, and get my kids talking about food in a healthy way.
What inspires you to create?
9 time out of 10, I get inspiration from the food I have on hand.  I like pulling fruits and veggies out, which is usually my base and start from there.  Its fun to look at a apple and think what I can turn it into, like the top of an umbrella, rays of the sun, or teeth on Frankenstein. But there are times I am stumped and ask the kids for input and then go from there.  But mostly the ideas live in a crazy little corner in my head.
Any advice for other mommas?
ALWAYS REMEMBER ITS FUN!! If it’s starting to be stressful, stop and just throw together a ham and cheese, if they never knew you were making it fun it will not hurt them to not get it that day. Remember we are making memories. So even if its just a little banana palm tree, its a banana palm tree they will remember and look back on fondly. To make it that more memorable, sit down with them and make up a story with the plate.  Maybe that little banana palm tree sits on a little island, which a little monkey lives on…you get the idea.

Hope this inspires you to get in the kitchen and think beyond the plate!

We are more than a kids’ fashion magazine. We search everywhere for inspiration, and go beyond trends to bring you fashion, style, decor, design, books, DIY, parties, and playthings. Our readers look to us to keep up with the best and most up-to-date concepts in the children’s market worldwide. We have an eye for quirk. We’re high-fashion, but we value whimsy over tradition. Playful childhood is more important to us than making kids into copycat adults. We believe life is beautiful, life is valuable, and life changes when you see it through the eyes of a child. We seek to transcend skin color, language and zip codes and bring out the real, wild, magical creativity inherent in every child. And behind Babiekins is an optimistic team of mothers-turned-editors, working from home, often with our own little babiekins climbing on, under and around the desks. We want to encourage you, and challenge you to see something different — something special — in yourself and in this world we all share. Welcome to Babiekins!
