Momkins // Hey Pretty Mama: Heidi Powell

By Brittany Williams, Former Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

I have been long time friends with my gal pal Heidi Powell for over a decade.  The masses love her for her “realness” even though she is a celebrity, and I can attest that she is in fact, as real as they come; also as genuine as ever.  She transforms the lives of others while being a busy mom to four kiddos, and works along side her celebrity trainer husband, Chris Powell.  So how does she keep it all together?  What are her favorite workout outfits to wear?  How does she remain so real and beautiful and balanced?  I sat down with her and asked her all the gritty questions that we are all dying to know.  You can also check out her new book, Extreme Transformation: Lifelong Weight Loss in 21 Days for amazing health and weight loss tips from the dynamic duo known as Chris and Heidi!

Hey Pretty Mama: Meet Heidi Powell.

1). You and Chris are obviously known as trainers with huge hearts that genuinely care about the lives of those you are transforming. How does being a great mom to four kids work into that daily cultivating of others roads to transformation?

Believe it or not, I give all credit to my success in the transformation world to the fact that I am a mama, and I have been from the beginning. When I met Chris, his approach was very scientific. It was all about calories in and calories out. His, and really “our”, approach changed dramatically once we teamed up, and parenthood was brought into the mix. I started helping out on season 1 of Extreme Weight Loss, and we had 8 very different personalities to work with at once. It very quickly became less about science, and more about spirituality and emotional balance.

Motherhood, as you know, is not science…and if you think it is, you are in for a rude awakening! Motherhood is about that emotional balance, and about connecting spiritually with yourself as well as with your kids. I had 2 kids when I met Chris, both with very different personalities. I already had experience with and knew the importance of creating boundaries, following through with discipline, having structure, and more importantly, loving unconditionally. So it only seemed natural to me to introduce Chris to the world of parenting, in a way, to create more of a unique and “whole” approach to transformation.

Fast forward 7 years, and Chris and I have 2 more kiddos together, 4 total. Parenting together has molded the way in which we work with every single person we come into contact with now. As well, having the opportunity to work with individuals from every walk of life on EWL (some with some pretty tragic circumstances) has only made me hold my littles closer at night, and appreciate every little thing about them.

2). Women look up to you as a role model for many reasons. What is the one thing you hope to accomplish to inspire others? Business related (go working moms everywhere!) and also family related?

More than anything, I hope to accomplish ONE thing that crosses over for me into both personal and business work: I hope to inspire women everywhere and show them that YOU CAN make a difference in this world OUTSIDE of your home at the same time you are making a difference inside of your home. You CAN be the example for your kids of how to treat others, how to love unconditionally, how to give selflessly, and how to live a healthy lifestyle. I feel like too many moms these days live with ‘mommy guilt’, and are too scared to accomplish their own dreams outside of the home out of fear of neglecting their in home responsibilities. I want all moms to know that not only is there a way to accomplish both (fulfillment in the home, and for YOU personally), but it’s necessary. Happy home only happens when Mom is happy! There is nothing wonderful about a home lead by an unfulfilled, sad, and depressed mommy. Moms MUST take care of themselves and their needs FIRST…and it is only after that, that they can take care of themselves.

3). What is your go to outfit when you aren’t in gym clothes or at a photo shoot?

Ha! Miss fashionista here…not. Now this totally depends on my mood and my to dos. If I am going out to run errands or to a meeting, I am super casual with skinny jeans (gotta make my buns look perky!) and a cute tank. From there, I can make it dressier if needed with heels and jewelry, or I can dress it down with my Havianas. I DO love dressing up every now and then…and when I do, I am a SUCKER for a Leger bandage dress, heels, and cute shoes. I like things that hug my curves, accentuate my buns that I work hard to grow, and make me feel like a woman. Now if I have nowhere to be, you will most definitely find me wearing my Reebok lounge pants with a tank…barefoot. Always barefoot.

4). What is the best advice you wish to share bout life, or motherhood, or balancing the two as seamlessly as you do?

Don’t compare yourself to anyone other than yourself! It’s way too easy to see other moms on Instagram seeming doing it all better than you think you are doing yourself. You’ve got to remember that comparing yourself as a mom or a person to someone on Instagram is like comparing your reality to someone’s highlight reel. It’s like comparing apples and oranges. We are all human, we all have struggles…some are just better at hiding them than others. Cut yourself some slack and know that you are doing everything as well as you can! You are perfectly imperfect…and good enough JUST AS YOU ARE!!!

5). I have known you for years, and I love that I have seen so many different phases in your life. You seem to always adapt to the present and still maintain such a positive outlook daily, despite being busy or stressed. What is your recipe for that amazing smile and cheerful personality that we all have come to love about you?

Ahh…this makes me a little emotional to read. Thank you!!! Gosh, I don’t even know what to attribute it to. I will say that I am naturally a realist…I let Chris do the dreaming, I will be the one to bring him back down to reality really quickly. So maybe it has something to do with the fact that I never expect things to be perfect. Ever. I live by the motto: Expect the worst, hope and work my buns off for the best. Sounds CRAZY, I am sure…but I really think that because of this I rarely have unmet expectations, neither have I ever encountered a situation that I didn’t KNOW I could change simply by adjusting my attitude. I have realized and fully accepted that there are many things in life I can’t control… I will try like heck to control as many things as possible (#controlfreak), but for those things out of my control, I CAN control my attitude toward them. Plus…gosh, I just feel so dang blessed in my life and always have. Yes, I have encountered hardship in MANY ways…but at the same time, why focus on those things when I have so many other beautiful things I can focus on that can make me smile?

6). Can you share your favorite items that you use when you workout that you can’t live without?

Yes!!

Slingshot resistance bands – I don’t work with this company at all, I am just in love with their bands I recently stumbled upon. They make EVERY workout a glute burner. I love them. They help build and engage the medial glute…the part of your buns that helps create the nice heart shape.

Weight belt – I don’t do a workout without one. While many use these for core stability and support when lifting heavy weight, I use mine – cinched tightly – as a reminder/cue to engage my core and vacuum (aka. Draw in from my belly button).

Squat Sponge – Hip thrusts seem to be a staple in my lower body workouts these days, and I legit would cry without my squat sponge!!!! It makes the weight of the bar bearable on my hip bones! Love it.

7). You are supermom when it comes to involving your kids with the business side of things. You and Chris both seem to be mindful about sharing your love for helping others get healthy, as much as you do having your kids experience it along side you. How has the positive ambiance impacted their love for keeping their bodies healthy and also reaping the benefits of seeing your job help others?

Without a shadow of a doubt, the kiddos do follow our example. We have learned that the more we push a healthy lifestyle on them, the less they want to listen! Leading by example has been key for them. They see what we do ourselves and what we do for others, and naturally they want to follow. It’s pretty cool to see Marley and her friends creating circuits for themselves in our garage with out ANY encouragement from us…just the example they’ve seen. Hands down though, one of my favorite things as of recent was bringing Matix to a workout we did with 16 people we are helping along the journey. The entire time, Matix was right by their side…coaching, encouraging, and participating to help them accomplish a victory. SO cool!!!!

Sleepykins // Artsy Playroom

By Brittany Williams, Former Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

When I was designing the playroom in my home for my three young boys, I knew I wanted it eclectic; just like each of their individual personalities. A blend between their love of art and music, mixed with touches of books and various collections, and finished off with pieces remnant of nature. That was the perfect eclectic balance I was looking for, in order for them to each express themselves.  This has been such an enjoyable space for us to hang out in as a family, and we love being able to be creative and play for hours on end in the playroom.

Momkins // Fall Florals

By Brittany Williams, Former Fashion Editor 2 Comments

Fall florals are among some of my favorite prints. Moody and jewel tones scream cooler temps, changing seasons, pumpkin patches, and cornfields! The perfect dresses to take you into autumn are those in a maxi length, billowy, and with a great floral print in fall colored hues. This one from Free People is a good transition piece from summer, because it has pockets and long sleeves, but the material is nice and light.   I love the dark color with creamy blooms and pops of olive. Fall dresses are killer with booties and a felt hat, and this one in a camel brown hue reminds me of caramel corn, yummmm. Hello autumn, we are so happy you are here!

Momkins // School Bell is Ringing

By Brittany Williams, Former Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

Every year it is the same routine.  Kids wake up, and you rush around like a crazy lady making everyone breakfast and packing lunchboxes.  Then you have to get the kids dressed and out the door before the school bell rings.  Am I right?!  With the morning chaos during the school week, it is no wonder us moms end up looking like we just rolled out of bed as we creep up to the school drop off line.  Instead of tyring to be incognito and hoping you blend in with the pavement in your pj pants, carve out some time for you before the rush.  It will make your day start off on the right foot, and eveyrone knows that when Mom is happy, everyone is happy.

I have been dealing with the dreaded morning school rush now for a solid four years, and I gotta say, I have found several things that make the morning run smooth and easy.  I like to squeeze in time getting myself prepared (mentally) and also getting myself looking less "mombie" and more human.  Ha!   For starters, a game changer is waking up BEFORE your kids.  I know, we all want to squeeze in those glorious ten extra minutes in heaven before we are summoned back to Earth by "mom" being yelled in our face as a wake up call.   Don't do it!    Set your alarm for fifteen minutes before your kids wake up at their usual hour.  Fifteen minutes doesn't sound like a lot, but any veterean mom knows that in a few minutes with no kids, mountains can be moved!  In those few quiet moments, I like to make my bed first thing.  It starts the tone for the day.  I wash my face and get dressed and do my 5 minute face.  If you really want to keep it easy, then skip the makeup routine all together and invest in some fabulous giant sunglasses (aka a mom's best friend).  When I am getting dressed for school drop off, I always opt for a T-Shirt dress or simply a T-Shirt and Jeans.  Easy and no fuss, bam!  A T-Shirt dress is the perfect way to be comfy, put together, and keeping it simple.  For my makeup, I wear only bronzer, mascara, and brow pomeade during the day.  I save the full face for the weekends out and date night.  I also always use concealer and under eye brightner, because these bags are here to stay.  Also, grab yourself a good tinted moisturizer and skip the foudation, It saves time and hassle in the morning.  Hair can be easily done by throwing it up in a killer Top Knot. I like to add a row of clip in extensions for a fuller top knot and pony (it makes it so easy to do).  If I am opting to keep my hair down and loose, I simply spray some sea-salt spray and just toussle my bedhead for a perfect "less is more" beachy look.  Done.  See?!  Mountains can be moved in 15 minutes.  Now the kids are just waking up and you are already ready mentally and physically and you have time now before school is in session.  Go get em'!

Momkins // Easy Breezy

By Brittany Williams, Former Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

Nothing beats an evening on the Bay surrounded by family.  The breeze, the salty air, the sailboats as they cruise by; its all magical.  I like to wear simple sundresses that are light and feminine and perfect for dancing around the shoreline. A classic sundress is versatile enough to throw over a swimsuit and to take you into the night hours, which means less hassle and more time to play!   A Pizza picnic and a stroll through the palms and you have yourself the recipe for a wonderful Summer night.  Shouldn’t all Summer evenings be about the easy breezy and simple living with your Babiekins?!

Momkins // Floral and Turquoise

By Brittany Williams, Former Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

A  floral shift dress and Turquoise jewelry (or anything Turqouise) is my favorite Summer uniform.  Turquoise reminds me of all the tropical vacations that I dream about daily, and a good floral frock is always a must.  Pick bold and oversized floral patterns with a dark background so the colors pop.  This will make your  dress have a more modern vibe, and be less “borrowed from my grandma’s closet”.   I love pairing shorter dresses with neutral suede or leather booties or sandals to keep it grounded and not too girly.   Or! Even better, forget the shoes and go barefoot and dance away with your babiekins on the sand at the beach!  Summer is here, horray!

Featurekins // Loved By Sophia Claire

With all the rainbow of colors, faces of animals, and light up everything, it is nice when you can actually find baby gear that is simple and stylish.  I love anything for baby that has a nod to simplicity and good design, rather than in-your-face fussiness.  These pacifier/toy clips are perfect, because they are hand-braided and real leather.   These clips from Loved By Sophia Claire, have become an everyday necessity that I, and my baby, enjoy using on the regular. Oh! An added bonus, is that you can customize the clip shape and color of leather, so now you and your baby have something to smile about!

Sleepykins// Kashton’s Eclectic Nursery

By Brittany Williams, Former Fashion Editor Leave a Comment

Kashton is my third, and final baby.  He is the youngest of three boys and I knew exactly what I wanted in his nursery.  Being a veteran mom, I know what works and what doesn’t. I also know the value of a mixing inexpensive and hand-me-down, with expensive pieces to make the room eclectic and functional.  I kept his room a neutral palate, and then let his books, plants, and little curios be the pops of color throughout.  We are big music and literature fans in our home, so I wanted to reflect that in his space.  My favorite piece of art is the one hanging above his change table with the lyrics from Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young”, one of my favorite songs.  I am an ocean girl, and I grew up spending the summers by the sea.  My husband on the other hand, is a mountain man.  He could snowboard everyday of his life, and live in a log cabin in the mountains if he could.  I wanted to portray both of these vastly different spectrums in his room, so Kashton has a reminder of the love his parents have for both land and sea.   The Pine Tree wall decals, and the water color shark jaw embody both perfectly, and are a fun mix.   All of his books are hand-me-downs or gifts, and they all have special meaning.  His Miffy books on his change table were mine as a baby, and the thrifted brass duck heads and thrifted brass lamp base all add a touch of eclectic whimsy. I’ve learned over the years to spend more on crib bedding, than on the crib itself.  I purchased a very inexpensive Ikea crib, but his sheets are a soft as butter and so snuggly.  Perfect for a full nights sleep (all mamas love that)!  His dresser and rocking horse have been in all three of my boys nursery.  The Rocking horse was my very first purchase for a nursery ever, when I found out I was pregnant with my first son.  I have no intentions of parting with it, like ever.   It has been such a joy rocking my baby boy in his room every night since birth, and I love the natural light that dances around the plants and the serenity I feel inside this space.

We are more than a kids’ fashion magazine. We search everywhere for inspiration, and go beyond trends to bring you fashion, style, decor, design, books, DIY, parties, and playthings. Our readers look to us to keep up with the best and most up-to-date concepts in the children’s market worldwide. We have an eye for quirk. We’re high-fashion, but we value whimsy over tradition. Playful childhood is more important to us than making kids into copycat adults. We believe life is beautiful, life is valuable, and life changes when you see it through the eyes of a child. We seek to transcend skin color, language and zip codes and bring out the real, wild, magical creativity inherent in every child. And behind Babiekins is an optimistic team of mothers-turned-editors, working from home, often with our own little babiekins climbing on, under and around the desks. We want to encourage you, and challenge you to see something different — something special — in yourself and in this world we all share. Welcome to Babiekins!
